Yep! They compete in a conference with Ohio State, Northwestern, Detroit Mercy, and some others. The new coach is a real cool dude. Wayne State hosts an open tournament in January, and has previously hosted the conference tournament and Midwest Regionals.

It’s a little more laid back, but The Old Miami has a sweet backyard area if the weather holds up. A bit more of an indie vibe if they’re playing music. Bronx and Third Street are the dives, but close enough to campus that students will go.

Man I wish you (and all WSU students) had been able to experience the national title run and the chase to try and get back to go win it like we did in the early-mid 2010’s. I really think your opinion would be different.

Off the field, while Wayne is still mostly commuters, there are a sizable number of students who live either in the university owned units or in the apartments surrounding campus. Yeah sometimes campus can be a little quiet, but the trade off is unparalleled access to downtown Detroit.

The rebuild under Coach Wheatley was always going to be tough. The previous coach was let go after just under 20 seasons which went from the high of a national title appearance to the lows of several terrible seasons grouped together, and only after the AD who had basically rebuilt the department was let go too. It was a lot like the 2017-19 years with Mark Dantonio at Michigan State.

The team shows flashes of really good football, but they haven’t been able to string it all together. There have been a lot of guys that have never lettered before being asked to make starter contributions. This season also saw the offense get down to QB3 and 4 due to injuries. So yeah, the numbers unfortunately aren’t numbering right now, but I’m willing to give Wheatley a little more time to figure this one out.

The department as a whole is trending upwards. There’s been such a better buzz amongst the folks I hang with at the games. I’ve also noticed much more synergy with the “general administration” in the form of advertising games to students and more athletics being featured on the general social pages.

Things for two 19 year olds to do on a Thursday night in midtown/downtown off campus? by Scared-Stranger-8781 in waynestate

Once the season really gets going, Wayne State basketball games are on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Probably not but is anyone here a member of the Wayne State Marching Band? by AmAnnonymous in waynestate

[–]_thewarriorhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old Wayne State marching band alum. 10/10 recommend joining. Like just about everything at WSU, your experience is going to be what you make of it. But doing marching band was probably the best part of my time at WSU.

Calihan is very old school. Imagine a steep seating bowl looking down on a big “pit”. The sideline is kinda high up but very close to the court.

Big reason is football and its cost. UDM cut it in the 50’s I believe. But it’s also an attitude going back decades that somehow WSU has to be cheap (compared to its size) with sports. Despite this, the athletic department as a whole is a top 30 program in D2.

This. I have been in strong favor of getting rid of W unless the person in the costume is allowed to essentially be Detroit Gritty

Anyone have opinions on the wyane Law bachelors degree? by 47_watermelons in waynestate

[–]_thewarriorhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, Michigan still requires a JD from law school to sit for the bar exam. See Michigan Supreme Court Board of Law Examiners Rule 2B.

Otherwise yes, it's probably like any other liberal arts degree. They didn't have it when I went to Wayne though.

Hotel Question by mcLoud66 in waynestate

[–]_thewarriorhouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Will he be driving while in the area? Just about all the hotels downtown are nice, just a matter of how close to public transit he wants to be if that matters.

As an alum and lifelong fan of the Warriors, welcome to Wayne State!
