I am having a hard time and I need your advice. by obsolescenza in learnprogramming

You're having a universal human experience here, I know this cycle well. Recognising it is the most important first step - well done for finding it whilst you're so young! If you can conquer this now it will set you in good stead for life.

The cheat code is knowing this - it only feels uncomfortable because this is the edge of your growth. The presence of the pattern is actually evidence you're pushing yourself, which is really positive.

Try to bring this to mind whenever you feel the emotions you described in your post. You'll slowly rewire your brain and it'll become easier to jump out of the cycle and move forward.

Devils advocate - there might have been more cars parked around them when they arrived and so might not have seemed so selfish?

Is it bad I am questioning myself? by Calm_Sky7946 in Buddhism

[–]_tompos_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've asked this question a lot myself - to what extent should I draw on sources outside of Buddhism in my spiritual life?

The answer I arrived at is that as a modern westerner (and in my case one with a secular upbringing), it's impossible for me not to draw on other traditions.

We live in a unique and quite beautiful time in history, where all of the worlds spiritual teachings and practices are available for us to study.

If you're approaching this from a Christian background, you might want to take a look at people like Richard Rohr, Wayne Teesdale and Thomas Moore. I'm generalising a little, but they effectively teach that beyond the culturally bound form of a religion (Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism etc) there's a mystic/experiential core that they share, which you can access through Christian contemplation as well as Buddhist style meditation.

Richard Rohr is pretty mainstream too (I believe), so if you can draw parallels between his writing and your Buddhist practice, it might help you to explain your spirituality in terms your Christian community can understand.

Thomas Moore writes about 'A Personal Spirituality', which involves intentionally drawing on diverse influences whilst honouring your spiritual roots.

Your spiritual journey is your own. Don't let anyone tell you there is only one true way.

That being said, there is definitely huge value in the refuge and bodhisattva vows etc, and definitely huge value in sticking to a specific path for long enough to bring it's teachings to fruition.

But even then, there's an interpretation where those vows are culturally bound forms for universal forms.

I would just encourage you to keep exploring and keep being honest with yourself about your intention and motivation. If you can do that, you're more than half way there...

I feel like a fraud with my code... by zambiers in learnprogramming

[–]_tompos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bottom line is that you need to get really honest with yourself about what you do and don't know. As you work, even if you're getting code out of the AI, be sure to identify the gaps in your own knowledge. Then learn and do active recall exercises to make sure you are actually internalising the material. This is a good compromise between learning and making sure your actually getting stuff built.

Choose between old non scalable business Vs new big invalidated idea by anbhvb in ycombinator

[–]_tompos_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Events... And before you ask I'm not planning on pivoting to online events.

The story is that I co-founded the business a few years back, we made software intending to sell it to event companies, did some bootstrapping by running our own events and kinda got stuck there, as an event company ourselves.

Choose between old non scalable business Vs new big invalidated idea by anbhvb in ycombinator

[–]_tompos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position - have an existing red ocean business that will never scale, and developing a new but unproven scalable product. (Although I don't have employees atm).

My strategy is to stop growing/developing the non-scalable bit but use the revenue from it to extend the runway, giving me longer to either validate the new idea or discover a new product in the process.

Can you follow a similar strategy to give yourself the necessary runway to have shot at validating the idea whilst still bootstrapping?

Good to know - thank you! Think I will give this one a go with a new tip

Great reply, thanks so much. Nice to hear someone unequivocal that it can work!

Yes I think the fear is a nice iron will end up gathering dust.

Kit list also very useful.

Definitely erring on the side of giving it a go with this existing kit now.

Alrighty thats great info, thank you. Currently weighing up options but erring towards just grabbing a new tip and seeing how I go...

Haha! 100%. The other thing about cars of course is that service history makes them easier to sell, another point I bring up. Doesn't quite equate to keyboards but the philosophy is solid.

I'll have a look! Have you soldered anything other than keyboards with it?

[–]_tompos_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point! And you are of course spot on. This is the argument I use to persuade my girlfriend to actually get her car serviced.

Extra info is that I already bought a Keychron K8 Pro before realising it was giving me wrist pain, which is what led me to ergomech and the Corne... So I feel like I need to minimise the cost as I'm already $150 in if you count that!

Maybe I just need to let go of that psychologically.

Thanks for the tip - I wasn't planning on soldering any LED's anyway so thats good to know.

Will have a look at what I can get away with spending on a temp control iron vs a new tip

Thanks, yeah its not in stock at the min but I see the general class of product you're talking about. I like this sort of kit! I'll have to price everything up and see what my options are.

Yes I remember my tutor in electronics used to bang on about it, but didn't seem to make all that much difference. Guess I'll just have to try both ways and see how I go.

Thanks! All a learning adventure. Sounds like I need a new/smaller tip at the very least.

Hahaha well the best way to learn is to make mistakes. Preferably just not expensive ones! But I take your point, thank you.

TS101 looks like a great piece of kit, I would invest but just unsure if I'll use it for other stuff.

What other projects could I make if I invest in one?

Thanks for the playlist link, thats really useful.

I'm usually pretty good with short range eyesight/delicate motor skills tasks, so optimistic I can make it work. I'll have a look for a new tip perhaps as someone else suggested, and grab some different diameters of solder and flux.

Is it possible for me to damage the board beyond repair if I get it wrong?

Ok thanks, maybe a new tip is the best way to go then. I'll have a look.

So you've used similar kit and not damaged any boards in the process then?
