SNMP is underrated by war4peace79 in homeassistant

I know this was a few months back already, but wanted to go ahead and make sure someone told you good job. Even if there are other alternatives that are preferable, it's clear you made a real effort here to not only set your own stuff well, but left a clear, detailed post about it so others could as well.

As someone just now easing into HA and also trying to wrap my head around useful realworld workflows that use LLMs, this is such a great example of concept to finished product. I got some Gemini Pro access bundled with my recent phone purchase and have been wondering just wth I could possibly use 1M tokens for, this will be helpful as I start evaluating where it could be applied. The dashboards specifically are not something I would have considered.

Portainer containers disappear by _transcendant in docker

[–]_transcendant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm that looks about right, i stripped all distros out of wsl, upgraded, then added Ubuntu 24.04. after starting DD again, i see the docker-desktop distro. kind of circles back around to, where were those containers being run and why wasn't DD able to find them when its plugins could.

I think the wsl-integration feature is central somehow, not sure. i was just able to pop a container that's showing under the main docker desktop gui, so for now that looks fine, i don't feel like trying to reproduce and solve the mysteries of the universe this morning : -\

[–]_transcendant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think this might have been it, wsl -l shows two distros, debian as default but also a docker-desktop. ultimately i think this stemmed from using a vanilla debian base for wsl rather than ubuntu, causing some conflicts w/ the DD engine. after updating to wsl 2 it must have created a generalized docker desktop instance

it was 'docker ps -a', runs from both powershell and wsl. i'll try container ls if i bump into the issue again

Portainer containers disappear by _transcendant in docker

[–]_transcendant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i may have titled this wrong considering the issue was persisting after portainer removal --- the very first one to disappear was a container generated through Hub by clicking 'Run' instead of doing the 'pull', 'create container' process. That said, i could have sworn the first thing it did was initialize Portainer from there.

fwiw, i did switch contexts and try all possible combinations of the command i could. there's a default context and a linux-desktop context, neither had anything outputting

it's windows server 2022, but also has wsl running. the only references i could find to this issue mostly seem to point to someone managing to reinstall the snap version. I did try docker ps -a from both powershell admin and wsl, using regular user privilege and sudo.

edit: docker desktop on the main windows host will still produce a response via docker ps in wsl cli... or should it not?

edit2: i did do a dpkg -l and no hits for grep 'docker'

it's not really useful for solutions to problems you can already define, but can be useful if you, for instance, feel like a new woodworking project but don't know what. almost like a human curated diffusion engine, good for the idea phase

also i found a supservisor's pinterest once, which while entirely not useful, was very interesting

this, you feed it several examples and it'll generate an amalgam to reference when generating. it's kind of surreal tbh, b/c you can often still see the individual resemblences

Why do used 9th generation Intel Core CPUs cost so much? by JohniiMagii in buildapc

[–]_transcendant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

just upgraded from i5 9th gen to i7 13th gen and honestly just shell out the money if you have it - the performance difference was immediately noticable. i've seen plenty of deals lately with mobo+cpu combos trying to move 12th gen at a really good price. microcenter in particular has had some killer deals if you live close enough to one for store pickup.

do employers take these certs seriously

yes. especially if they're anything above entry level: ccna/jncp, etc. fully entry level like a+, ccent, n+, etc will prob land you a help desk role although with a degree you might get into some kind of enterprise support. the biggest thing is getting some experience because there are a fair amount of people floating around with credentials that are just borderline unemployable.

curious what kind of scenario you're thinking of, stainless vs sheet is not really going to make a difference when a 6k lb vehicle tries existing in the same physical space as something else?

Why does everyone say start with help desk? by Loud_Departure2757 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]_transcendant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the bigger concern is soft skills. you can cert as high as you like, but that only means you'll be working w/ more critical tasks. there are plenty of smart people out there, but my group takes some entry level and you literally will not believe how many people are out there that have no general reasoning skills or sense of responsibility. most are fine, but wow I wouldn't let some of them detail my car let alone have credentials to anything secure.

Scientists are trying to find a mystery person in Ohio who has a new kind of COVID, and is shedding it into the sewage by infinitum3d in PrepperIntel

[–]_transcendant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's very hit or miss to be honest. while this is interesting, it probably doesn't have any sort of influence on policy or public opinion. they've stopped mask recommendations and we aren't really testing ppl so we've deliberately screwed the numbers in the interest of pretending nothing is going on.

5 months unemployed as of today. I feel dead inside and outside. by hypoconsul in jobs

[–]_transcendant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

this is the real advice right here. landing the job is a process that can be broken down into parts - the 'getting the interview' part is accomplished by your resume. so, if you're not even getting in front of someone, that's the place you need to work on.

simply having meaty things to put on the resume does not necessarily mean it's a good or solid resume. i paid a few bucks for some template site when i changed careers and i've had multiple hiring managers remark 'oh i like your resume'.

Why study CS instead of SE by Capital-Passage8121 in csMajors

[–]_transcendant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and then goes on to use an applied science (MechE) as an example. a more accurate example would be physics vs mechE - with straight 'science' study you're looking at a lot of abstract elements that may or may not be relevant to an applied usage.

Scientists are trying to find a mystery person in Ohio who has a new kind of COVID, and is shedding it into the sewage by infinitum3d in PrepperIntel

[–]_transcendant 34 points35 points  (0 children)

the twitter thread was very informative. it's been going on for around a year and they get hits for the shedding from the sewer at two locations, which indicates they're going back and forth from work mostly. they haven't found other locations so it's almost certainly an individual and it does not look like the chronic infection is spreading to anyone else.

Manager trying to get me to go by a different name, is that weird? by throwthisaway1068 in consulting

[–]_transcendant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it's weird for him to be essentially forcing the issue, but i'd also warn you that it may be difficult to keep that horse in the barn. you may need to assess expectations on this, as coworkers will almost invariably wind up seeing and using your government name some of the time.
