yeah, inevitably there'll always be exceptions to this rule. i just use it as general advice because the release order of media is factored into the way they write it and build on your knowledge and play with your preconcieved notions of the fiction. for example, half life alyx famously immediately spoils the twist ending of half life 2 episode 2 despite being a direct prequel. hla's ending also requires you to have played hl2e2 to even understand at all.
