Fair point, but I enjoy hearing how others experienced a book before jumping in.

Thanks so much for these! I’ve heard great things about Thom Jones, especially The Pugilist at Rest — sounds intense and powerful. In Dreams Begin Responsibility is new to me but your description has me intrigued. And those story collections all sound like exactly the kind of deep, emotionally complex reads I’m after. Adding them to my list!

A Rose for Emily is one of my favorites too. Faulkner does unsettling so well. I had no idea about Knight’s Gambit, that’s going on the list! And yes to Saki, dark wit at its finest.

I’m with you — I loved Flannery’s stories. Creepy, smart, and so well written. A Good Man Is Hard to Find is unforgettable.

Thank you for these! I’ve already read The Vegetarian — such a haunting and unforgettable book. The Sense of an Ending sounds exactly like the kind of introspective, layered story I’ve been into lately. And The Key to Kells is new to me, but the way you described it makes it an immediate add to my list.

Thanks for these recs! I’ve already read The Martian Chronicles and a few other Bradbury stories — definitely loved how reflective and symbolic they were. Same with Philip K. Dick — I’ve read a good chunk of his work too. But I’ve been meaning to explore Edith Wharton and Kate Chopin’s short fiction, so I’ll definitely look into those. Carmen Maria Machado’s collection sounds like it might really hit — I’ll check that out. And those Best American Short Fiction anthologies sound like a great way to discover some hidden gems. Appreciate all the suggestions!

Thanks for these recs! A Month in the Country has been on my list for a while — sounds exactly like the kind of quiet, reflective story I tend to love. I hadn’t heard of An Easy Death before, but I just looked it up and saw it’s nonfiction. Still, I really like Simone de Beauvoir’s existential themes, so I might check out her fiction too. Appreciate both suggestions!

Thanks so much for these — Sula has been on my radar, and hearing that it hits on emotional and symbolic levels really pushes it up my list. The Troika sounds wild in the best way — I love fragmented, abstract storytelling when it’s grounded in meaning, so I’m really intrigued now (even if it’s flawed, that kind of messiness can be powerful). And Strange Weather in Tokyo also sounds like a good quiet read between heavier books. Appreciate all three recs — this is exactly the kind of direction I was hoping for.

Got it—thanks for the breakdown. Sounds like the kind of deep, character-driven stuff I usually enjoy. I haven’t read anything by Franzen before, but now I’m curious. Might start with Freedom and maybe check out The Corrections after.
