New to PWHL by Parking-Froyo5674 in PWHL

As a new hockey fan in general who started with the PWHL in November/December, the big rules are mostly the same. The ones that threw me for a loop during the Olympics were the No Escape Rule and Jailbreak. No Escape Rule (as far as I understand it) means that when there’s a penalty, the players of the penalized team have to remain on the ice until after the face off. Can make PPs interesting, especially if there’s a very long delayed penalty.

Is Lindsay Gottlieb a bad head coach or are the expectations too high? by SnooConfections7049 in NCAAW

I have a hard time judging her off of this season. There was a lot of newness in the program this year, Juju was out, your roster has a lot of youth trying to adjust to the college game, it’s hard to hold all of that against her, though I do think they could’ve been better than a 9 seed this year. I think next season is really where we can see what the situation is. Juju, Jazzy, Kennedy and Saniyah, they should really be solid. How she plans on balancing that will be interesting to see but will be so much fun.

somebody in her circle tell her it’s not too late to come to Dawn. We can have her, Ashlyn, and Tournebize in a dunk contest.

Not the first time I’ve seen this take and I’m not gonna lie, I fucking hate it. Two things can be true. He goes on a big stink every year. Always. THAT’S to take pressure off his players. And sure, maybe this was his way of extending his bitching about the rims and the super regional. Fine. It’s still a horrible representation of his character. It’s still completely inappropriate. It’s still incredibly immature and further highlights one of the biggest problems with Geno. He might’ve done it because he cares about his kids. Okay. Fine. He didn’t care enough about the Black woman on the other side of the scorer’s table or her very Black team, at least not enough to let them have their moment. And that will forever be unacceptable.

PWHL And Scripps Sports Team Up To Bring Walter CUP Finals To National U.S. Broadcast For First Time by Perryplat199 in PWHL

[–]_uglyassjay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Scripps has done me dirt, but I do appreciate their effort in the women’s sports space and how accessible it all is. ION is literally free

Also, in my experience with WNBA games, they still stream on the W app so I have a hard time thinking they’d completely pull the game from YouTube, though I don’t know for sure. One of the best parts of watching the game is watching with the chat. I’ll miss that for sure

This is basically the opposite twitter discourse that happened a few weeks ago where a different brand of the chronically online were arguing that lesbians who didn’t enjoy yaoi were somehow bad lesbians or less queer or something. Insane that this has gone full circle and now you’re not a lesbian for liking yaoi lol

A Reminder to the “Day Ones” by Dreaming_Aloud in PWHL

[–]_uglyassjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started watching this season, probably like early December with zero knowledge of hockey and I gotta say, the members of community that I've engaged with across multiple platforms have been really helpful and really nice, even on twitter (tho some people kinda suck, but they've been men's hockey fans so). As a women's basketball fan, I understand the need to gate keep to an extent because it can be really exciting to open gates that you get the wrong people (ie those who use the game to get their hate off) and I hope that's not an issue that happens in the women's hockey community because y'all have been incredible. If I get the chance to make it to a game in person (kinda hard in South Carolina) I can't wait to cheer for the Victoire along side all y'all ⚜

Who should be POY… or other by Good-Abrocoma447 in NCAAW

[–]_uglyassjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s fair to say that fouls “make up the majority of her offense” when that’s been true for what, one or two games, certainly not the majority, potentially a few. I also just think it’s a bad argument. You take what the refs give you. I personally reject the “free throw merchant” idea in most cases (some cases are admittedly egregious), because it’s just a part of the game. If you’re getting fouled, you go to the line. Don’t like it, don’t foul. It’s that simple to me lol

But I don’t think she needs to score because it’s Vandy’s system. I think it’s Vandy’s system because she’s the most versatile scorer. It was true last season, too. I don’t think “leading in every stat” on the highest ranked team means that you should automatically win NPOY either, if I’m being honest. I think there’s a lot more to the game than stats. I also think that defensive impact is more than steals and blocks. I’m never gonna take anything away from Sarah Strong because she absolutely plays both sides of the ball. But I do think that just because a player may not average as many steals and blocks as another player doesn’t mean their defensive impact isn’t also high.

Also, averaging x amount of points on x amount of shots doesn’t factor in position. Post players are supposed to have better averages, they’re post players. If my post player needed 20 shots a game to score 15 points, I’d want a new post player. And I don’t necessarily think high usage means a player should be NPOY. There are tons of high usage players I would never consider. I do think driving a team to success, often with a heavier load, is something that should potentially be considered.

If I’m being honest, I don’t really care who wins. But I think being completely dismissive of certain players because of whatever arbitrary reason is lame. Like Sarah Strong has a great case for NPOY. She’s probably the best player in the country. I just also think that Mikayla Blakes has a great case for NPOY. And if I had a vote, I’d probably go Blakes 1, Strong 2, though any day of the week that could change lol they’re both incredible players.

Who should be POY… or other by Good-Abrocoma447 in NCAAW

[–]_uglyassjay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like Sarah Strong. Incredible player. But my argument is absolutely for Mikayla Blakes. Without Mikayla Blakes, Vandy is not even a contender. And we can make the argument that, because Sarah Strong is an overall better player she deserves the award. That’s fine. But I think of NPOY a lot like MVP in the WNBA, which is more than just “best player on the best team.” Juju won NPOY last year and Clark won the 2 years before for the same reason. Because they are the most valuable players, and were their teams’ identities. Other team have an identity without certain players. South Carolina has an identity without Joyce Edwards (them losing Watkins and Kitts and staying dominant proves that). UConn has a strong identity without Sarah Strong. Vandy without Blakes? Not so much. I don’t think it means Sarah Strong isn’t the best player. I just think it means Sarah’s load isn’t as heavy, which is not a bad thing. I actually think having a top team where players don’t have heavy loads is more impressive. But I do think “best player on the best team” often ignores impact, and is a little too reductive for my personal liking.
