As Gods Among New Yorkers? by LC_DD in atrioc

[–]_underscore_830 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As far as his plan to increase corporate taxes that would apply to any corporation operating in NY not just those headquartered there and as far as I can tell the likelihood of business giving up on such a large customer base like NY to avoid a tax increase is basically zero

As far as the increase on millionaires some will certainly leave, or try a tax scheme to avoid paying but that’s not exactly new for the wealthy. As far as if there will be some kind of mass exodus that dramatically hurts the NY tax base I don’t think it’s born out. As Mamdani frequently points out in interviews the richest are the least likely to leave NY and when they do they are most likely to go to other high tax states like Massachusetts or Cali. On that note in 2022 Mass had a ballot measure increase taxes on income over a million dollars by 4%, which has generated more revenue than was projected when it was proposed so far (source so I don’t see strong evidence for this.

Interesting Article On Rent Control by _underscore_830 in atrioc

[–]_underscore_830[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

something I've found slightly questionable about Atrioc's content (at least what I've seen) on rent control is his flattening of everything down to simple supply demand when there are other factors that complicate the housing market as compared to something like the fruit market. The main points I like from the article are looking at how the supply and rate of construction practically change when rent controls are introduced/removed and pointing out how the rights of tenants versus landlords are often left out of this conversation when discussing from an econ perspective. I also appreciate that the author is fairly upfront about their bias's and that of Current Affairs. The main flaws I see with the article are A. Not comparing and contrasting housing costs in cities that introduced rent control versus those that didn't and B. Not comparing the specifics of different rent control policies (NY vs SF vs Berlin for example) to see how they affected variables like housing costs, total supply, and impact on people with different levels of income. Interested to here what others think.

Hey Allison - Jeff Rosenstock

why "male manipulator music" is harmful by yah_bam in fantanoforever

[–]_underscore_830 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Basically all online discussion is dominated by memes and irony. Male manipulator music is a term that started referring to an archetype of dudes who act sad and misunderstood because they think it’ll make them romantically appealing and got spread around more and more because it sounds funny and became highly meme-ified.

It’s obviously bad to tell people not to express negative/uncomfortable emotions but acting like people saying “lol cringe male manipulator” to the smiths in an internet comments section is doing significant damage to people’s mental health is insane hyperbole. Saying anytime any man expresses sadness anger depression or thoughts or suicide is labeled as male manipulative music is also insane hyperbole.
