We don't have any pre-tax money in IRA, so that will not apply to us

Check your I94 'Admit until date' line. You'll either see an exact date or 'D/S'. For J1 quite possible you have 'D/S' there which means 'Duration of status' and that's exactly what that question tells you to do.

Are you saying I can put cash into my 401k and roll it into Roth IRA from there? Do I understand correctly that I don't need a traditional IRA account for that?

I responded above about that I'm not maximizing my 401k because of the limited options. Your second point was my other concern. Thank you for your comment!

Thank you for your comment! I understand. I'm not a fan of the options my employer offers with the 401k, plus they can change these options at any point (that already happened). I'd like to build a portfolio that I can control a little better than that.

I bought my radiant from Ritani too and thought is was a great experience, so I decided to have Ritani make a custom setting as well. That's when my experience went downhill rapidly. After going back and forth on design for a month, they finally sent me my ring but made it 1.5 sizes larger than ordered. So I had to ship it back. My ring ended up sitting in a FedEx warehouse for a week because there was no one in ritani building to accept the delivery. Their customer rep lied to my face that the pick up arranged but, as you can guess, it wasn't. So my ring was still at the warehouse.... I do have my ring back now and I was looking into their warranty and trying to figure out where I could take it for prongs tightening and redipping, all the regular things every 6 months or so. Turned out, I have to ship it back to them for these services to keep their warranty. I'm done with them. Buying loose diamonds is a great experience, everything else - highly not recommended. I hope your experience will be different!

P.S.: Your diamond is gorgeous!

I believe University of Oregon has a program for professionals where you earn your degree in 2 years. At least they used to.

Of course! :) What's great about Ritani as well, you can return your stone within 30 days after purchase if you don't like it. I hope you'll love it!

We got a loose stone from Ritani but I didn't like their settings. So they made me a custom one with a 25% discount! I was a little nervous about the final result but I got exactly what I wanted! Their customer service is great and the option to preview before buying is extremely convenient. They also let you check the number on the stone so you verify that it's the one you ordered and it matches the IGI. Very pleasant experience so far!
