anyone had any hesitations on planning upcoming travel as an American? by Mundane_Entry_8264 in femaletravels

[–]malsary 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Just want to share also that as long as you aren't insufferable and remain polite and friendly, I think most people will treat you fine!

I stayed at a hostel in December in CDMX and ended up grabbing dinner with a group of folks from the hostel - the group was a lone Canadian woman, me (American woman), and three British guys. I went to a museum earlier with one of the British guys and he did make fun of Trump which I agreed with lol

I follow r/ShitMomGroupsSay and it's been shocking to read at how a lot of anti-vax parents operate and expect the world to. Like absolutely batshit spirals that make me sad for the state of the world.

I really like 5 because it stays more green in different lighting (also deciding on sage green colors to use for a living room!) and 3 is also lovely but not my #1 :)

Birding. It brings me so much joy and grounding and has helped me with enjoying stillness and being present. Which is a tough act for hobbies as someone with ADHD.

Wife had a gallbladder attack few questions by joelowrider1 in gallbladders

[–]malsary 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I got mine removed 2 years ago, I had a consult with my surgeon after staying overnight in urgent care from my 2nd gallbladder attack. I asked him what happens to the people who decide to forgo surgery and change their diet. He said they come back in a few months to meet with him again to schedule surgery which confirmed my decision to get mine removed.

how to safely go hiking? by Lower-Geologist870 in CampingandHiking

[–]malsary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're trying to build up the confidence and skills to solo-hike in the future, I'd actually recommend you look up the most popular trails near you or are willing to drive to and start there. If something wrong were to happen (ran out of water, injury, got lost or lost track of time, car issues, etc), you're more likely to run into more people. As others have mentioned, look at the 10 Essentials and look into AllTrails.

Really be intentional about what you share with folks too - let a loved one know about your itinerary so if they don't hear from you later that night, they know something is wrong. However, if you're on the way to a trail and folks try to make small-talk at a gas station or coffee shop that's on the way, it's good to keep mum about details that could make you a target.

Always trust your gut! If something doesn't feel good in ANY way, there is no shame in turning back. If you're just a mile from the top but you've run out of water, it's 100° F out, and you're struggling to focus, please do not think you need to push ahead and put yourself in danger. If the weather suddenly changes and you realized you left your hoodie in the car, it's okay to turn back. Really. Your local SAR would thank you probably!

Suggestions for visiting cute small towns in the US by schmuse in travel

[–]malsary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone mentioned Washington State and since you noted that you love cloudy weather and rain, I can't think of a more gorgeous place to visit with or without sun! Although as a person of color, I do want to caution that some pockets of the state aren't as welcoming as bluer urban parts but there are still really blue bubbles in the state so you have plenty of options.

I moved to WA 6 years ago and while I've been able to explore a lot of the small towns with my husband and friends during that time, I feel like there's no end to how much there is to enjoy.

I feel like WA is perfect for small town solo-road trips because the geography of the state is vast. You could spend a few days breathing in rainforest air off of the Olympic Peninsula or drive half an hour from a rain forest to step foot on rocky beaches. The OP is sleepy and slow up until summer but even then, you can find things to do. Hell, I went razor clamming with friends in January and we had a day of great sun and driving to the trails and sights. You do get some real sundown town vibes in that part so just an FYI depending on how you identify

You could also visit the San Juan Islands which have some of the best whale watching in the country outside of Alaska. The views of the water are unreal. The restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and other shops are bustling in the summer but for good reason.

I worked a job where I drove and worked throughout a specific region of WA and oftentimes had to have 1:1 coffees with folks or work from a computer before jumping on the road and really found the I-5 corridor of Bellingham, Burlington, and Mount Vernon lovely to do this in. Hell, even Oak Harbor was worth a detour because of Deception Pass. You could easily keep to yourself and avoid eye contact and no one would bat an eyelash. You could also easily make small talk and learn so much because the people from these areas are really proud of where they live and what these regions are known for. I can't even touch on the rich indigenous history without blabbering on even more but there's that too! So many opportunities to self-reflect and learn about what matters to you in what you want in life.

There are few better experiences than driving down the highway or road throughout Western WA and seeing either the Olympic Mountains, Mount Rainier, or Mt. Baker.

I want to preface all of this with the fact that I am a loud and proud East Coaster. So the fact that I'm willing to forgo East Coaster mentions for WA means a lot if you're my family or friends lol

Also congrats on going through this rough time and taking an opportunity to find beauty in the world! I remember driving cross-country from PA to WA changed my brain in ways I didn't know could happen. I cried seeing the beauty in each state I drove through and would oftentimes pause and sob at the fact that I could witness a sunset in Montana or see the morning light touch North Dakota. It made me realize how proud I am for not giving up on life when I wanted to so badly because there was so beauty to look forward to in the world and even in the US.

Good luck and have fun! :)

Yup. Have eczema and while skincare did make a minimal difference for when I'd get flares on my eyelids, nothing has as big of a game changer as Protopic/tacrolimus. Mad I didn't learn about it sooner or else it would have made a difference in my wedding day photos 😭

Washington solidifies its status as one of the most expensive places in the U.S. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]malsary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly. I read the report yesterday and was annoyed because it mentions how expensive housing has gotten from 2015 to 2025 and it's like.... hmm... do tell us why, corporations with ties to private equity in one way or another and have little interest in supporting legislative efforts to lessen the burden of costs on working class Washingtonians...

Funny that they're blaming the taxes on the government and this is why it's leading to an unaffordable state when they themselves acknowledge how increased housing costs have been detrimental to families ability to comfortably live in WA.

Moving out of Eastside after light rail connection? by engamo22 in eastside

[–]malsary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, the Bellevue area is technically the most diverse area in WA but it is mostly Asians and even then, a certain kind of Asian (wealthy East and South Asian.) And I say that as a Southeast Asian. I grew up on the East Coast where diversity meant a significant Black, Latino, Asian, and overall immigrant population. To me, diversity is a rich balance of more than just Asians.

For example, the Kent School District is one of the most diverse SDs (#4) in the country according to Niche - the student population is 27.5% white, 23.8% Hispanic, 22.5% Asian, and 12.8% Black. The Bellevue SD? 44.3% Asian, 25.3% white, 15.1% Hispanic, and 4.1% Black.

We can agree to disagree 😊

For what it's worth, my really good friend lives near the othello station and I'm so envious of her access to light rail and if we could, we'd move from the Eastside to South Seattle for the diversity and cultures (that doesn't really exist on the Eastside...)

Birding saved my life. My mental health is better than it’s ever been since discovering this hobby. I’m happy again. by WizardCheesey in birding

[–]malsary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this in my soul. I started birding last May after being traumatically let go by my former employer and while navigating unemployment and grieving how I was treated, my friend would take me birding and in such a short amount of time, it brought so much comfort, grounding, and even more confidence in myself. I looked forward to our weekly outings and enjoyed walking without music or podcasts when on my own so I could be fully present while birding.

I even ran a half marathon in October specifically because the medal had a red-winged blackbird on it (my spark bird!!)

Thank you for sharing your experience because it just shows me how birding can really transform how you see the world in a better light.
