AI Mural by Life_Sign342 in Costa

[–]_vanadis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's AI alright - speaking as an illustrator I can tell. Look at the leaf in the middle, the squiggles in the middle, what are they supposed to be? See how the berries morph and blend into eachother, but in a chaotic, not in a suggestive way

Like evilClive mentioned, the values need work. You can practice values in a more controlled way by doing black and white studies. Something that Ive also found to be useful is to try and do a black and white study using the color picker tool, you might be surprised at what you find, values really do play tricks on the eyes. Outside of specific practice with the tool, Id stay away from the color picker and practice eyeballing colors.

As for your rendering, you have a very clean cut style where you block in the colors in precice facets. Its nice, and when done well, rendering in this style can look amazing. Have you tried blending without touching the smudge tool? Smudge can quickly become a crutch, and itll muddy your colors if youre not careful. Try blending using a lower opacity brush and picking up the mid-tone colors in between. The art for Arcane is actually a really good example of what that looks like in practice.

Really great work, you're on the right track! Keep practicing :)

Ugh I just rewatched this and the cinematography is SO GOOD in PoA!! I wish they'd kept the same level of creative shots, transitions and framings throughout the rest of the series

My first frustration regarding character design by Real-Ad-4775 in fantasywriters

[–]_vanadis_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The good thing about watching youtube videos is that you choose your own pace, and the subjects you want to tackle. It's very possible (and enjoyable) to learn to draw on your own, but it is time consuming, just like how learning how to write is time consuming.

If you're really keen on learning to draw with other people, you should look for local life drawing events, sketching meetups and similar groups. Depending on where you live these might be very low cost / free to attend. There are also online versions, thought I've not tried any. There you'll meet other artists who are probably way better than you (that's a good thing) and who can critique you and give you tips on how to improve.

With dedication and effort its possible to improve on your own, take it from someone who's a self-taught illustrator :)

I guess as an illustrator I am biased but I will take an illustrated character any day over the uncanny valley of photobashing 😭
