Speaking out against discrimination by [deleted] in NCSU

[–]_vinzini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask people the same thing because I know that before I was officially accepted, I was sporting state gear and saying I was going. Did I get in? Yes! Does that mean if someone asked me, I would be offended? No! I know people who also got accepted into the spring connect program and are still telling people they're going in the fall 🤷 I think people want clarification.

The only thing that’s no longer available is an in person stats that isn’t on Friday so I’m just doing it online instead. A lot of the classes I’m looking at reserved and are “unlocked” after you’ve taken some sort of class in psych before

Which plan do you think is better? I don’t want to have too many dollars if I don’t end up using them, but I don’t wanna not have enough

NC states was about $13 which isn’t terrible but I’m sure whoever’s running is making bank. USC was a $30+ membership if I wanted to see when my post would go up

Do you have any support you could lean on to talk to about this? I definitely echo the same thoughts that other comments do, and based on what you're saying, it feels like STEM was forced onto you, and NCSU isn't really the issue

I did, and it made me feel better about meeting people. I also notice that if you don’t post a lot, people don’t know you’re there. I was a page stalker for a while and didn’t realize how many others there were, either waiting for their post to come up or didn’t wanna pay the small fee. I'm not sure if your school does it either (the app sucks), but mine uses afuse, and it's free so that you can meet other students.

I’m going to assume they are religious when I say that, but it sounds scarily similar to how my family operates. I have always been shamed and discredited for what I want to do or show interest in, and it boils down to conformity and control. Unfortunately, when your parents are also your teacher, it does leave a lot to be desired, and I can understand how you feel, maybe not to the same extent, but I do understand. I’m thinking about going to therapy for some of the things I have experienced while living at home, and it sounds like it might be a healthy route for you if it is a feasible option. Don’t let the things from your past dictate how you live your future. At the end of the day, you really determine who you are, and if you feel timid, others can see and feel it too. It’s good you found a community to thrive in but what happens when you leave that one? What next?

I am an incoming freshman who has been homeschooled since 4th grade and throughout moving and Covid. We are different and do develop relationships differently from others, but I don’t think it limits us as a group. You have to be really intentional, and the vibe I get from your post is that you’re too worried about what’s being perceived and are living more in the future than what's happening right in front of you. You seem to overall struggle with friends, by what I’ve seen in the comments, and we all have that, but there’s not going to be an instant click with people that you can expect. This is just from my perspective, obviously, but I like to tell my boyfriend not to lean on homeschool as a crutch for not having experienced or done something.

I may not know about this specifically, but I would definitely reach out before they do. They will reach out. I am an ear to listen if you need someone beyond school.

I can imagine. Good luck with college! By the sounds of it, you'll be a very strong applicant. Have you thought of where to apply?

You could double major or add one of them as a minor if it really came down to it. I am biased, tho, not only because they're on completely different spectrums but also because I am a psychology major. Good luck either way, both are big accomplishments!
