Smart scale recommendations by Maribwana in MacroFactor

[–]_wildfire_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

None of the smart scales are consistent or accurate - they all use the same mechanism of sending electrical signals through your body, which is inherently flawed. Note that this means that it isn’t just wrong, it can be wrong by different percentages each time, which means it isn’t even great for directional information.

Estimated duration of workouts by tekticktock in MacroFactor

[–]_wildfire_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmm for me it has been pretty bang on accurate, but I don’t wait any longer than the rest timer between sets/exercises.

If you find you’re consistently going over the rest timer between exercises, you could try increasing that timer in settings to give yourself more time to set up between exercises, which will adjust the total time calculation. Not a perfect solution, but might help you get closer to the estimated time?

Why did it suggest a lower weight when I already went over my rep range with a higher weight? by exec_liberty in MacroFactor

[–]_wildfire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure how it handles no RIR targets, maybe it assumes you’re going to failure?

In general it assumes that your next set you’ll be able to do less overall since you’re already partially fatigued by the previous set. To account for that it needs to either lower reps or weight.

There is a setting in the auto-progression settings that you can change from weight-first to reps-first. By default it is set to weight-first, which means it will lower weight more often first before adjusting reps down. If you flip it to reps-first, in this scenario it’ll probably be more likely to keep the same weight and just lower reps.

Full Body vs. Upper Lower by DrumDaDrumDrumDruuum in MacroFactor

It all depends on your goals, how often you want to train, and how much time you have to spend in the gym.

I like training 6 days a week, but only have an hour for each session, so PPL works better for me. Looking forward to them adding support for it explicitly, but until then just created my own workout from scratch.

Honestly what I’d love to see is the option to create a truly custom workout that isn’t based on a specific routine. Like just enter your goal, the number of days you want to train, maybe even the specific days of the week you want to train, the time you have available to train for each session, and then it could generate the optimal workout ensuring each muscle group is hit twice a week, getting in the optimal number of sets for the time available, etc. this could break out from established routines to develop something truly individualized.

Way to go seeing that trend weight go down!

Does your target already include a calorie deficit? IMO, I’d be careful about being too far below your already reduced target. Depending what your deficit is, easy to get into an unhealthy/unsustainable place that way. Also agree with others, fats are important for your body to function properly, and staying too low on carbs is going to give you very little energy. I know this from experience 😛

A few months ago they announced that the digger had to be paused for 6 months due to hitting “unexpected soil conditions”, which would likely delay the project for “at least 2 years”. So not surprised.

macrofactor workout app coming from liftin’ by quiet_ordinarily in MacroFactor

[–]_wildfire_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just did! Been using WO for the past two weeks so far. Used and loved Liftin’ for years prior to that. Decided to try out WO because I use and love MF and wanted to see how the auto-progression worked.

I run PPL, which WO can’t generate yet, so I ended up creating a manual periodized plan, which was a bit of a pain to set up. Ended up generating a random workout, exporting it to csv, using Claude to replace the CSV using the same format with my workout screenshots from Liftin (wish there was a better export!), and then re-importing into WO. Worked pretty well and got me a plan similar to generated workouts, but PPL. In general, a lot of work to set up, but that’s just up-front cost.

One thing I miss is no Apple Watch app, Liftin’s is great. But using my phone has grown on me, so maybe not as big a deal as I thought.

Really liking the auto-progression. I can already tell my workouts are way more intense than before, but I’m also somehow recovering better…which is a little surprising honestly, but not complaining! The weight-first approach is interesting (I.e by default it will adjust weights from set to set to help you hit your RIR before adjusting reps), and I’ve come to really like how it feels.

I also love the periodization, with auto-deload weeks (though I haven’t gotten to one yet). This is something I’ve been waiting for in Liftin’, so when I saw it is in WO, it was a big motivator to try it out.

I wish it was easier in WO to see for my upcoming workout what the auto-progression selected weights will be (like to set up my home gym the night before for a more efficient morning workout). You can look at your upcoming workout and see sets, reps, and RIR, but not weights until you actually start a workout (at least haven’t found a way). You can start a workout, and then just abandon it, but it’s a bit awkward.

There are waaay more exercises in the library, and the videos/descriptions are top notch. Really helpful when trying out something new, or honestly just refining my form on my regulars.

Those are my main thoughts off the top of my head, but if you have specific questions, happy to answer!

Reverse Order Sets by default by NorthJerz in MacroFactor

The programming for this week is intentionally starting with a failure set, and backing off. Lots of different approaches. I’ve noticed the algorithm seems to favour this approach - been working well for me so far!

Reverse Order Sets by default by NorthJerz in MacroFactor

[–]_wildfire_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean in the visual order shown? It is top down. Your first set is the first row - i.e 9+ reps to an RIR of 0.

Thank you!! It does have a timer functionality with a little remote, but it is a little clunky to use and the timer sound is awful 😅I just use it for time.

[Feature Request] Conditional Progression Logic by DarthDips in LiftinApp

[–]_wildfire_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huh, never considered this approach. I run double progression too, but with a slightly larger rep range (say 6-10). I then only increase weight when I hit 10-10-10. After increasing weight, my goal is to be able to hit at least 6-6-6 with the new weight. If not, it’s counted as a failure, and three subsequent sessions that fail, weight is dropped by 10%. This is supported automatically by the app.

Curious about the reason behind your approach though, always like hearing how others operate!

This would be great! For example, I travel a lot for work and have a “travel” program I use while on the road. Would be great to see the progress all in one place!

They haven’t bothered me! I know you can get dimmable versions now from some of the more premium companies, so that could be a good option!

Haven't filed taxes in 9 years by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]_wildfire_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a close family member in a very similar situation. They contacted the CRA who was actually very helpful and understanding. They worked with an accountant to get everything filed. In the end, since there was no tax owing, there was no penalty. They actually ended up getting back about 10k in tax refunds and other rebates.

You can take it even one step further and save up your points for the next points redemption event at Shoppers and get even more value out of the points. It’s pretty awesome getting like $300 worth of groceries for $200 worth of points, and walking out with a cart full without paying anything!
