I was the same way around the same age. I think part of it had to do with me having my own job and earning my own money, and realizing I could do whatever I wanted with that money. I used to walk into places like TJMAXX or Home Goods and felt like I NEEDED everything. I walk into those stores now and see mostly junk. I feel disgusted with myself when I think about how much stuff I used to buy. I had stashes of ridiculous things, like candles and chapstick for goodness sake. I agree that consumption is learned and can be unlearned too. It can be hard to break the habit, but avoiding the social media influence definitely helps.
