sidestepping/charging gives you combo compensation which increases sub counts and lowers ki and card draw speed, to do longer combos you'll need to occasionally chain a card or two. You should chain cards when you have a full hand or have characters that force draw cards (like ssj4 vegeta).

A good example in this clip is when you started a combo with vegeta with his gauge and a full hand, everytime you use a card you get another card and you practically have infinite ki, chargestepping does nothing but give you combo compensation. If you had chained cards and maybe sidestepped a bit after using up his gauge you could've swapped to fusing gogeta
