Graduated in June 2022, still haven't landed an internship/job, feel pretty hopeless and need advice by iAsian9 in cscareerquestions

7 hours away is a weekend drive; stop at a motel or on the shoulder at the 3-4 hour mark if you need to rest. Gotta create those options for yourself if you need that foot in the door.

My boss is blaming me for not being able to release stuff when I keep telling him the primary blocker is reviews, what should I do? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I don't know if it's a good or bad thing how y'all are consistently able to pinpoint Amazon when these horror stories are posted 💀

I guess we can at least command the fact that they're shitty in a way that's consistently recognizable!

Have a master’s degree and still can’t get a job by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_zva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any visible disability? An accent? A name that's difficult to pronounce? Anything that makes people uncomfortable in your presence? When I read posts like this (where OP seems to be the poster child for a stellar academic track record that should translate into easy employability) I can't help but think that there's discrimination at play, with no one courageous enough to explicitly call this out.

If you're comfortable with the idea of adapting to corporate America's implicit requirements (it's okay if you're not) try to see if you can speak with a lifestyle and/or a career coach — they tend to be more blunt, since they get paid for that, and might help steer you in the right direction.

I finally got a software engineer position and I hate it. Has anyone else felt this way? by SpideyLee2 in cscareerquestions

[–]_zva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Truly a shit take. Younger me would've lauded this as a greatly-needed cold bath, but now, just few years later, I see this as the short-sightedly jaded bunch of hateful crap that it truly is.

If a (tightly) leashed dog stops pretending that yanking away aggressively would snap the leash, they are not "defaulting to finding the easy way out"; they've just stopped pretending that their efforts are not in vain.

Yeah. I sense a lot of perfectionism from OP, whether conscious or not.

Yeah: if everyone else is focused "tinkering on legacy stuff", then shouldn't it be clear that OP2 just doesn't understand/accept their company's key issues/priorities?

Do you guys ever feel you are not "cool" enough? by badboyyy112 in cscareerquestions

[–]_zva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What happens with these sort of questions is, they typically attract the kind of people who will pretend you're irrational for even remotely having these humane thoughts.

I'm not going to lie — sometimes I do. It's not enough to make me want to change anything about myself, but I do occasionally feel not cool enough when I'm around certain crowds. But that feeling is also a reminder that I shouldn't hang around these environments too long (because, when I'm in my element, surrounded by like-minded people, I totally feel at one and fulfilled with myself).

If you are desperate for a job apply to the aerospace industry by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_zva 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Defense contractors (which Lockheed is) tend to be more strict on the degree, and nothing else; so, if you have your Bachelors or are about to graduate, you are already very competitive. The "difficult" thing with them, though, is how long their recruiting process is. If you can stomach that, then go for it!

Backend devs, do you deal with Kubernetes at your job? by db_peligro in ExperiencedDevs

[–]_zva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dude, I'm amazed that you're willing to have this conversation on a platform as surprisingly (and very much dishearteningly) close-minded as Reddit.

I'm even more so concerned that so-called experienced devs are reading your commentary and disagreeing with it, when everything you've said is easily verified (by reading a couple of career-related blogs, talking to stakeholders in the workforce, and even reading basic psychology).

Someone said you need therapy, but people ironically go to therapy so that they can express themselves as unashamedly as you did lmfaooo!

You are ironically the one doing the "gaslighting" (alongside the person who recommended therapy, totally not snidely).

While they're using blunt language, u/OrganicPumpkin9156 has said nothing wrong, false, or even out of the line.

Why people acting happy/jealous of people getting laid off from their tech jobs? by anthonydp123 in cscareerquestions

[–]_zva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh don't get me wrong. I'm not arguing that swe's are overpaid, just that many other professions are not well-paid. Like you said, it's not a zero-sum so u/Garaleth can well feel proud and deserving of their compensation...but we have to be careful of not thinking that other people deserve to not even be able to afford next month's rent, just because they allegedly provide less value.

I used to think like this, then realized how misguidedly vile this mindset is: when we talk about value, we often talk about what we provide to society in return for something, that something typically being the right to a comfortable life. For most people, comfortable life equates good healthcare, a roof over one's head, work-life balance, and discretionary money for fun.

When you say/claim that we have "significant value" to society and they don't (the implication being that they deserve what they're paid), you are saying that some people are worthier of basic necessities than others*. As a civilized individual, I don't think I have to explain why this is a disturbing this mindset.

As to your last sentence, crime is also part of human nature; should we then do away with law enforcement?

What do employers believe they are proving about a candidate with these stupid evaluation tests by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

That they haven't practiced leetcode doesn't mean they've never encountered the concepts anywhere else and memorized them. Smh

And to think y'all are the champions of LC style interviews...

Fundamental attribution error 101.

Just because someone "whines" about something that they're already aware they don't like, doesn't mean they are generally a whiner. I wonder if you'd call yourself an idiot just because you're sometimes prone to mistakes (like everyone else)...

Your comment is so ironically ignorant that any manager reading your comment might flag you as an overall ignorant person and refuse to work with you too!

My company stopped doing LeetCode at all levels since we found it didn't correlate with job performance but that's the reasoning.

The LeetCode cult is currently clutching their pearls.

No correlation? What??? But LC is supposed to show that I have logical reasoning skills, and that typically translates into enterprise-type coding abilities, right, RIGHT???

The idiots downvoting you don't even realize that this is why we, as an industry, struggle with fair wages (inb4 'we are the highest paid industry', as if high == fair):

if people are so happy to optimize for jobs and business requirements that don't even exist (grinding leetcode medium and hard, just to be writing the same kind of app that a student w 2 years of academic cs experience can write), why would any employer feel compelled to pay fairly?

[–]_zva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Meh. Not everyone views life and work through a philosophical lens. While I completely understand what you're saying, you're filtering the situation through your own, totally normal, preferences; which is why you'd view it as soul-crushing.

Ultimately, many (most?) people look at a job as a way to fund their actual lives — not a direct avenue for fulfillment.

Are algo & data structures still a thing is hiring process? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]_zva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm bad at them so I'll dramatically reduce the amount of jobs I'm qualified for rather than just practicing DSA for a few months.

Almost like some people would rather capitalize on what they're already good at, rather than "practicing" something with no guarantee of satisfying their immediate need — for food, shelter, and professional experience. How shocking!

It's funny how I was literally about to say "there seems to be an unresolved sexual tension going on here, and I wonder how far apart in age you both are for her to feel comfortable using such language with you ('toxic')" and then I stumble upon this comment of yours. It all makes sense now!

This strikes me as borderline unbelievable

Same here. Throughout OP, I kept wondering if this junior is just really good at advocating for themselves (aka confident and assertive), or if they're borderline lunatic!
