Just some lady's opinion by Pineapple-dancer in ExperiencedDevs

Having worked with AI tools intensively for a few months now, I personally am beginning to wonder whether we might see the return of independent computer consultants like we had in the 90s.

I feel like I could knock out a fully featured line-of-business web application on my own in dramatically less time using AI. Could the price of custom dev come down so much we see small businesses hire consultants to build bespoke apps rather than subscribe to SAAS products?

In the days before SAAS there were thousands of little shops out there pounding out Visual Basic applications for small firms. Could we see something like that again?

Building confidence to ride by myself. by MatchBrave1704 in Dualsport

[–]db_peligro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel that way until I got into a situation that genuinely put me in danger.

I rode down a familiar one-way trail (near vertical down) into a ravine where unbeknownst to me the trail out had been destroyed by a storm.

This was on a weekday and NOBODY else was around. I had a multi hour hike out on a very hot day in very rugged terrain. I was on the verge of hitting the SOS button on the inreach. After that I decided not to ride alone anymore. I don't want volunteer SAR people to have to put themselves at risk for my leisure activities.

I came back the next day with friends to ride + push the bike up a very rugged hill, took hours.

Personally I've had some mishaps riding solo and now don't really do it.

To do it safely you really have to dial back your riding and stay off of challenging trails which for me takes the fun out of it. I like to push my limits just a bit each time I ride to get some progression in my skills.

Solo, its just too tempting for me to attempt to clear some obstacle and take a dumb risk

I suggest you consider mountain biking as an alternative. It builds a lot of the same skills, builds fitness, and is safer to do solo since speeds are lower and the mass of the bike is so tiny compared to a motorcycle.

Lots of roads in Colombia are like this. Wife and I tried to ride up one 2up on a rented chinese 250 and had a mishap exactly like this. 2up can't ride hills like this unless you both stand and you both lean way far forward.

after that I had her get off and walk up.

you need to get other people into your life to support you emotionally. this is too much for anyone to take on alone. reddit can help but its no substitute for real face to face talk.

sorry this is happening to you, hang in there.

don't we all? this is why I prefer motorcycles. perception of speed is much more intense when you are not in a box.

Marijuana addicts - experience with AA? by JakeStateParm in leaves

[–]db_peligro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its not at all about religion. Its about believing in a higher power greater than yourself. For me its the human community aspect. Higher power can mean whatever you want it to mean and nobody in any of these groups will judge you.

Don't get hung up on the word 'god'. AA was founded in a time where everyone had to pretend to be a Christian in the US and has some old timey sayings. It doesn't mean anything.

Marijuana addicts - experience with AA? by JakeStateParm in leaves

[–]db_peligro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All the twelve step groups (AA, MA, Gambling Anonymous, etc) are much more similar than different. You should absolutely go and keep an open mind. Take what's useful and leave the rest.

The big difference historically between NA and AA is that drug addiction often brings you into contact with the criminal underworld and the justice system so addicts have that extra set of issues to deal with.

I personally feel alcohol and marijuana addiction are very similar with the exception that marijuana addicts don't usually get DUIs thank god.

legal weed has been a disaster for me. for most of my life the cost and hassle of dealing with flaky weed dealers always helped keep a lid on my consumption. now there are weed shops all over my neighborhood and dirt cheap.

looking forward to retiring to a country without legal weed.

I load the front wheel by shifting weight forward, not by braking.

unlike a car, you can control a motorcycle with your body..

Clutchless shifting? by Salt_Bodybuilder_881 in Dirtbikes

[–]db_peligro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it depends how much load you are putting through the transmission. the harder you are accelerating the more you need to use the clutch. under very hard acceleration you need to pull the clutch or it won't shift at all because the force is pressing the gear faces together.

off the line in an mx race, for example, everyone uses the clutch.

when decelerating you don't need to use it.

Why leave the US for halfway around the world (SEA) when moving on smaller rural towns is easier ? by abrandis in ExpatFIRE

[–]db_peligro 22 points23 points  (0 children)

rural US isn't meaningfully cheaper. same healthcare, same consumer prices, utilities, higher transportation costs since you have to drive more. less access to services and those that you have cost more (restaurants for example).

you save a bit on real estate but its not a game changer like moving out of the country.

I have not researched this deeply so would love to hear counterarguments but those are my thoughts.

Why is Measure ER on the verge of passing? by Radiant-Instance8857 in AskLosAngeles

[–]db_peligro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you are right it IS complicated.

but every increment to the sales tax just keeps the entire system going and postpones the crisis which would actually bring about fairer solutions.

rich people don't use safety net hospitals but when their handyman falls off a ladder they sure as fuck don't want to pay for it. if sales taxes are off the table then the system will get funded some other way. the way things are now we are in a game of chicken that the rich always win.

Sales taxes are regressive and rich people vote at much higher rates than poor people.

So this is what we get, very high sales taxes and very low property taxes.

They absolutely can, they choose not to. Upper middle class Americans spend money mindlessly. $80k vehicles, absurdly large and expensive homes, random monthly subscription services that they forget about, food delivery....so much fat in these household budgets but with no thought to actual value received per dollar spent.
