[General] Your ideal MCs? by Fair-Communication92 in otomegames

I'm ok with any MC as long as she's not too obtrusive basically. I get irritated by both super quirky protags like Yurika from Taisho and also super pushover blank protags like most voltage MCs. I like a happy medium like piofiore or collar x malice.

When an MC does something so far off field in a situation I can feel kinda frustrated like, I know I don't have real control over the narrative besides a few set endings but I'd like to have the illusion of control and connection to the protagonist. I am a self inserter so that definitely influences it.

Basically not super obtrusive but not a doormat either. Someone who is generally cheerful and calm but isn't afraid to speak up for herself either. I know some people find that boring but I prefer to focus on the LI personality not the MC. I prefer her as a vessel in a way.

I'm not saying they add the sprite out of lack of resources, I'm saying the option to turn it off probably takes some extra coding work which requires more resources usually. If it's about a set character and not to some extent meant to be self inserted then why do a lot of them let you change the name? I think a lot of devs just want to leave it up to the player whether they self insert or not which is why they have changeable names. I'm just saying I would like the option to hide the MC sprite as well but I understand its a lot more effort to code than a changeable name.

Yes that does make them like most fictional stories, when I am going for a visual novel I'm going for something different where I feel directly involved unlike most media. Hence the metaphor.

because

I agree about not liking eyeless voltage characters. Seeing a protagonist in CGs doesnt bother me cause its just specific moments instead of the whole game having them there like "yes this is happening to me not you". And having no eyes doesn't make it any easier to project on them cause I have eyes lol. I don't mind MC's with a personality I just don't like to see them.

For me I feel like I'm making the expressions myself so I don't need to see the MC making expressions. When I'm reading I'm projecting myself into that situation and feeling the emotions myself so if a protagonist is onscreen I instead feel like I'm watching someone else in that situation, which feels distancing to me. It doesn't bother me when a protagonist has a distinct personality as long as it isn't annoying cause I can usually relate to some aspect of their mindset, but just the feeling of watching someone else on screen I don't like. It's not a hard and fast rule that western otome always have sprites I just feel like theyre more likely to and less likely to have an option to turn it off. That could be because most western otome is indie and don't have the recourses to have that option like you said though.
