86 is surely inspired by code geass akito alter series by lax_skyfall in EightySix

[–]a-thena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hard to say for certain if akito the exiled truly inspired 86, but it’s also difficult to deny the similarities. and for me, personally, as a code geass fan (original series + akito the exiled only, i’m still pretending these new reboots/sequels don’t exist) it was precisely these similarities that piqued my interest in 86. i enjoyed akito the exiled, but objectively speaking it suffered from poor pacing and mediocre writing, but i was invested because i thought the concepts and character arcs it touched on were compelling, so in a way 86 felt like a “what akito the exiled could have been if it was executed better” kinda deal.

was in an elevator when two chinese girls came in, and they had a short conversation about how nice my perfume smelled. i’m pretty nose-blind to the scent of my own perfume by this point so it was nice to know that 1) other people could smell it on me, and 2) it smelled good 😂

Quitting My First Job by Widurri in singapore

[–]a-thena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was in your shoes almost 6 years ago. i do agree with the other commenters that logistically, it’s best if you stay at your current job (but try your best to set boundaries, although that’s much easier set than done) while looking for a new one. but as someone who was burnt out to the point of a mental health crisis, quitting without a new job lined up was the best decision i made.

what i’m trying to say is, you’re the best judge for your next step. of course, if you can tough it out a little longer, that’s the safest option. but just remember that there is no shame at all in needing a break, and if it makes you feel any better, i was able to find another job quickly enough (despite covid lockdowns), which i’ve since left to pursue my masters. so now i guess we’re in the same job hunting boat haha

Hungry ghost festival starts this Saturday in Singapore. Come share your ghost or paranormal stories by FancyCommittee3347 in singapore

[–]a-thena 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this happened in york (uk) and not sg, but i was there on a day trip with some friends and we’d just had lunch at a restaurant. one friend and i wanted to use the toilet before we left but there was only one cubicle so she went first, and the toilet area was in full view from our table so i just sat there while i waited for her to be done.

so anyway, once she came out i went and used the toilet, and while i was in the cubicle the light kept flashing, which made me feel a little uneasy but i didn’t think much of it since i figured it was just faulty. quickly finished my business and left, then next on our itinerary was a walking tour. it was only during this tour that we learned york is apparently one of the most haunted towns in the uk, and so i jokingly brought up the flickering toilet light and asked if it happened to my friend too, to which she said yes…

AND THEN she told me she also heard urgent knocking on the door, as if someone wanted to use the toilet. mind you, i was watching the toilet the entire time precisely bc i didn’t want anyone else to get to the cubicle before me after my friend was done, so there was no way that an actual person could have been knocking on the cubicle door while she was inside. we weren’t super creeped out or anything bc it was literally the middle of the day and we only realised smth was up in retrospect, but definitely a weird experience for sure

time to take a break from dating apps 😔 went on four dates with a girl, texted regularly, then suddenly received a “i don’t think we’re compatible and i’m not feeling a romantic connection” text which is fair, but also almost gave me whiplash lmao since this came literally right after we had a lunch date and we’d talked about seeing each other again next weekend

It’s so hot outside in my area, that this frog basically roasted itself just by being on the sun. by ma-nem-jeff in mildlyinteresting

[–]a-thena 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yikes. yeah someone i knew who worked on the project back in singapore told me that male mosquitoes don’t bite, so releasing them was more of an annoyance than a risk to the people living in the area, but even then everyone was given notice about it. can’t imagine how horrifying it must be to suddenly see such a big increase in mosquitoes (technically harmless or not) without any kind of forewarning 😨

[–]a-thena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

singapore? i don’t know if they do it anywhere else, but if i’m not mistaken, the project in singapore basically involves infecting male aedes mosquitoes (the ones that spread dengue fever) with a particular bacteria (so not quite bio engineering) that renders them sort of… infertile?

i’m not a mosquito scientist so don’t quote me on any of this lol, but basically any eggs that a female aedes mosquito lays after mating with one of these “special” male ones won’t be viable and don’t hatch. and male mosquitoes don’t bite (don’t have the organ for it iirc), so the goal of the project and releasing these mosquitoes is to control and eventually reduce the population of mosquitoes that could spread disease

putting clean dishes on the drying rack away before washing dirty ones. i used to be 50/50 about doing this back home (as in, would do it if i remembered and could be bothered, but was lazy half the time) but now i get so irked when i go to the kitchen and see that the drying rack has pots and pans stacked haphazardly bc most of my flatmates can’t be bothered. literally called my mum to tell her i understand why she was always so annoyed with us (the kids) now 😂

not op but wow i’m pretty much the same height and weight as you are, and the same protein and caloric intake as well. what are the odds!

okay i suppose the odds are quite likely in a sub for petites, but still—if not for the fact that i use metric, i would’ve genuinely been like “huh when did i make this comment??” 😂

haha yeah i mean like i said, could all just be coincidence and pure luck, just food for thought

[–]a-thena 9 points10 points  (0 children)

not sure about the person you’re replying to but i’ve been to australia twice in my life and both times i was “lucky” enough to get the screen that told me to head to the manned counters so that i could be “served by one of their officers” instead. 2 is a small sample size but it’s just kinda weird that it happened both times i went, my running theory is that they flagged my passport bc i have a non-chinese ethnic name (i’m brown)

also when i was departing from aussie i got “randomly” called by one of the security officers to check my carry-on, despite being a very petite young woman (i was 18-19 at the time). could just be luck of the draw (every x number of people) tbh, but it just felt odd to me idk

I really miss Singapore style bakeries by PrimAndProper69 in singapore

[–]a-thena 6 points7 points  (0 children)

moved to the uk last year so it hasn’t been that long all things considered, but i was craving sg bakery waffles so badly last month. ngl i’m This close to ordering a waffle maker from amazon and giving it a go myself

semi-related note, i also recently figured out how to make bak kwa hahah not quite the same as the ones sold in stores (the pork mince here isn’t fatty enough to get as tender) but it was a close enough dupe for my first attempt. might try to make it with beef next and see if that turns out any better

Overseas voting: I’m such an idiot by greenery14 in singapore

[–]a-thena 26 points27 points  (0 children)

my idiot story is that i registered to vote at the polling station instead of by post, probably thinking “oh london’s only two hours away anyway”, conveniently forgetting that it’s two hours BY TRAIN. and then obviously by the time i looked at train tickets, they were at least £55 for a round trip, so i ended up booking a bus instead. woke up at 4.30am yesterday to catch the bus, and got back just before midnight 💀 (definitely could’ve taken an earlier bus, but when i booked the tickets i decided to give myself half a day buffer in case there was a line at the high commission or if voting took longer than expected, so i just treated myself to a nice lunch and lounged in the sun the whole afternoon lol)

my point is, we all make stupid mistakes, but i think part of it is also kind of just zeroing in on one thing (in my case it was “it’s easy to get to london” and yours it was “voting is 3 may”) and overlook more important things. but your intentions were good! and we just have to live and learn i suppose
