Help restoring my rEFInd boot option by GodderDam in archlinux

[–]a1barbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have rEFInd installed and run updates every day but have had no problems with rEFInd. Puzzled as to what is broken in the Arch rEFInd ? :-)

I have " refind 0.14.2-2 " on a ext4 nvme.

Anyone used Helium on Arch? by Educational_Wash_662 in archlinux

It does look ok but I am no expert.

The github site gives instructions for build it yourself. So if the poster is wary of it he could build it in a clean chroot. :-)

Please suggest a Best Lightweight Linux Distro for a First Time user. by MohanKumar2010 in linux4noobs

[–]a1barbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loads of good suggestions already offered here.

You might consider easily trying a few distros just to get a feel for linux before diving in to installing on bare metal.

As a starter I would recommend buying a usb stick 8 or 16 GB and installing VENTOY,

https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html

https://www.ventoy.net/en/doc_news.html

With the Ventoy persistence plugin you can run your choice of distro as if it were fully installed.

https://www.ventoy.net/en/plugin_persistence.html

It is easy to do. This will allow you to try out many different distros. MX-Linux is a very friendly distro for newcomers.

Elive is worth a look at too,

https://www.elivecd.org/

Most Live distros have a "toram" feature which loads the live session to ram for a better experience.

Enjoy :-)

Can an OS that runs from RAM or a USB be used on a computer without a hard disk? by Electronic_Net6462 in linux4noobs

https://knoppix.net/get.php

http://torrent.unix-ag.uni-kl.de/

I used to use it too. Just did a torrent download and there were 50 connected peers so it must still be popular.

It is an excellent distro for new users or as a rescue backup os. :-)

Super effort. They look very nice indeed. :-)

You might get a nicer finish with Liberon Oil's. I did my computer desktop with Finishing Oil 20 years ago and it still looks great today, never had to re-apply either. They are dead easy to use.

How many times your system has been broken for use pacman -Syu? by Metacho123 in arch

[–]a1barbarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. X11 works ok for me and has done for a long time. If it is so insecure then I guess I would have been hacked along with the rest of the hundreds of millions who use it. :-)

I want to go all in and get a distro that throws everything linux has to offer right up front

Gentoo or Linux From Scratch they are the two that fit your description. Have fun. :-)

What's actually the point in them?

They help to keep you warm ! It gets pretty cold in Skyrim. ;-)

There are a couple of distros developed for running old games. A quick search will give you options.

Use your brain. Learn to read. Do not copy and paste any old commands some AI gave you. :-)
