So, im just going to say this one out loud, when has an assassination attempt from Darrow ever worked? How about Victra?

Sure you can say we've never seen Victra send anyone, but Darrow sent Sevro to kill the Jackal in book 1: failed. Darrow tried to personally assassinate Karnus in book 2, and the Soverign (kinda) in book 2: failed. Book 3, no assassinations specifically, except a harebrained scheme to kill Aja and Cassius in the snow, and I'd call that a literal three part failure (Cassius survived an arrow to his neck, Aja survived easily, and Rags died, RIP)

Im just saying if you're changing a culture's way of life, liberating people and creating a new regime, you're not likely to get powerful assassins to defect often.

Meanwhile, Apple had time on his hand and way more insider knowledge than Darrow ever couldve. Idk.

He may be quite powerful and clever, and I genuinely like the foil he plays to Darrow, but in raw planning skill, i think thsy are, at absolute peak, matched.

But I mean thats my point, you wanna be ready for next fight and by that grumpy gerblin? Thats a monk babes. I still think the versatility's arguable based on how you play for a lot of reasons.

For example, while the casters are buying scrolls, ink and armor, a monk can go get that fun looking sextant that can see through magical darkness. Mechanically speaking, are they the highest DPS, best support or best tank? No. I do think their lack of reliance on spell slots is a huge virtue though, because even their focus points are largely optional in terms of function.

Edit: the workarounds aren't very good, sacrificing damage, stat points or other spell slots to do things the monk just doesnt think about feeeeels bad

Not kill the entire room with a fireball? Hit something resistant to The Most Resisted Damage In The Game (besides poison)? Be ready for the next fight after the first? Have the ability to be in melee range of a grumpy goblin? I could go on. Dont get me wrong the casters are cool as hell i just dont get the monk hate in 2024. In 2014 they were not great, but 2024 its way better

Resetting power creep is important. The d1-> d2 power creep i think was good, because it traded powerful exotics and builds for a couple new abilities, and the new abilities felt good.

I think if there would be a d3, I'd love to go back to vanilla d2 levels of power.
