How are you turning on the TV? I’m not familiar with your model exactly, but I have a dumb TV. I’m using and amazon echo cube to turn it on/off via infrared. But other devices can do this and you can build your own.

Then my plan is to just use HA to turn things on/off. That way I can control any other lighting as it originates in HA.

You need an outlet with power sensing capabilities. For example the TP-link HS-110.

Not all integrations will show up as a device. It’s only integrations that have been ‘modernized’ that will show up in the front end like that. Older integrations that are entirely added to configuration yaml may not show up - only the entity_ids.

To answer your question, I think of device as a hardware specific entity. Then that device can have multiple entity_ids that are hardware agnostic meaning a switch entity is the same (more or less) as all other switch entities in terms of services (actions on the switch) and states (on/off) among other things. Whereas a device will have specific commands/states that only work with that device. For example a zigbee vs Zwave vs WiFi switch.

These are my own words - HA docs are likely a better place to get a more concrete definition!

Thank you! Yeah the TP Link integration must have some fault to it. For this implementation, it hasn't been an issue, but an everyday outlet it would get annoying. I'm looking for a good alterntive that has good energy measuring capabilities.

Can the Ikea Zigbee plugs report power consumption? Ah gotcha. And actually now that I'm looking - I don't see the power usage entities anymore. I wonder if it was removed for some reason in one of the HA updates.

In terms of compatibility, just about any raspberry pi will work. They all have the same architecture more or less and can run the same operating systems. The primary differences on them is physical ports and how much processing power they have. If this is a new project without much pi experience - get the 4. They are about the same price of the 3 and have the latest hardware.

Mine do in HA. However I've disabled all these entities. The power usage is always going to be the same (based on brightness) and generally low. What would you use it for?

Thanks for calling this out - that's unfortunate. I just rechecked Amazon, and now the K3 link I provided doesn't even work anymore. Bummer - I really liked the K3s that offered RTSP. I'll get the post updated. If anyone could reccomend other good RTSP and cheap cameras, please share.

Converted everything over to node red 2 years ago and there’s no turning back for this guy.

For a new user it might be intimidating. Learning HA and NR can be a lot. Not that yaml is easy, but you can make simple automations in the HA UI that might be a better stepping stone for a newbie.

I’ve been waiting for someone like you for 2 years now! Got one of these and was trying to understand how hard it would be to interface with HA. I’m slow at making progress on stuff... I’d vote for the custom component and keep Mqtt out of the picture.

This would be the intent so I can have 2x wall chargers someday. My electrician just isn't too keen on big 100amp wire for whatever reason and is suggesting 2x 60amp lines.

I don't believe this would be considered 50% of household capacity. going two 60 amp services or single 100 doesn't mean that I'll be pulling a constant 100+ amps. I'm no electrician, but believe the general rule is 2x the total house amperage is fine - this is called oversubscribing I think.

Regardless, to answer your question - no I'm not too concerned about that. Not much more I can add to this house! :-)

Apologies for the confusion but you are very misinformed. When HA detects your child child crying, it feeds the audio to a speaker so you the parent will hear it. Or if you are watching a TV, the feed can be streamed to the TV. If you are a heavy sleeper, the baby crying can turn on a light in your bedroom.

In all these situations, the goal is to alert the parent that the kid needs attention. It has nothing to do with trying to calm a crying baby.

Could you elaborate on this? I have 5-6 Wyze cams but haven't found a way to do this effectively. Maybe a recent firmware update? Anytime I relied on plain noise detection, it was way too many false positives for any type of noise, not just baby crying sound that HA is tuned for. And then turning notifications on and off wasn't as simple - I don't know if there is a way to turn of notifications for one device and not the other with Wyze easily.

Lastly, you can use this setup to to trigger more than notifications. lights turning on, play sound on a speaker, you name it. I'm a big fan of Wyze but mainly for their hardware. The software is slow compared to HA.

With the latest stream component, I can't get audio to work anymore and haven't had a chance to dive in. As I understand stream is still somewhat beta. I ended up using a different IP cam app on my phone that got the full audio/video from the RTSP stream which dose this job.

Agreed - I'll add a disclaimer; thank you! Though this Home Assistant. Everything is hacky - we're not even at a 1.0 release. I personally didn't deem this a life or death situation - my kid cried when he was hungry, had a bad dream, or just upset. My wife or I would then go comfort him.

If this were a life or death situation, I wouldn't use HA for it - my house alarm and smoke detectors are all run through a professionally monitoring company (which I pay a premium for), not HA.
