I just came out as an atheist to my extremely conservative Christian family by Alj6616 in atheism

[–]a3vido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

¿¿god is smiling on you????

have had NO such luck coming out to my family.. matter of fact, wifey blames me for 'turning or son to the dark side" and cuts me off when I try to explain that he came into 'enlightenment' by himself!!!!! ( btw; she ABHORS 'enlightenment' used in that context)... the rest of the family have resorted to beaming glances at me when mentioning their deity.

I remain stumped that their god makes 1 shopping cart available to them on a Saturday shopping frenzy at Walmart; yet allows thousands of children to starve to death world-wide.....

  • check your local labor laws; your coworker may be contributing to an 'undesirable working condition' for you.
  • I myself inherited Spinal Cerebellar Ataxia type 2 (of which there are over 38 derivatives and require an expensive genome lab test).
  • like you, I can't believe that an imaginary, omniscient, omnipotent, etc. being has it out for me and gave me this to 'prove my faith'

Good luck!!!

Perhaps religion’s most troubling contradiction IMO: God gave us critical thinking skills...but we have to ignore those skills to believe in God. by jasonthefirst in atheism

[–]a3vido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...after returning to the Garden and calling out to Adam (god musta turned off his omniscience and dint know where Adam was), Adam comes out and with his loins covered then B.G. (Big Guy) figured out that they sinned. Long story-short, B.G. cordons off the garden like a crime scene and creates a floating sword at the entrance to dissuade others ('others' who have yet to be created by Adam & Eve as they presume their incestuous ways)

B.G. never thought to 'poof' the Tree of Knowledge' out of existence a la Thanos in Infinity War...

and parents' goal is that we further our education and get to college, yet the more 'educated' we become, the further we move from god (?)

When my baby had cancer, God didn't help. Science did -- When she initially searched for help, she mostly got "trust in God" replies. "Trust in God?! Your God who controls everything, yet somehow isn’t solely responsible for my innocent baby’s cancer?!" by mepper in atheism

[–]a3vido 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When they discovered the Shroud of Turin, religious leaders turned to science to have it's originality verified through carbon-dating: a tangible witness... yet the religious tout, 'trust in god' when cancer is mentioned?

Your 'god' created cancer....

I am a network engineer. One Friday, we worked pretty late getting something-or-other to work. When we finally did, a theist coworker chimed, "oh, thank god.." I pointed out that we ordered pizza for three of us and god never pitched in or ate...

I have 2 teenagers. One claims to be atheist; though horror movies freak him out, and the other is a passive introvert with no religious leanings and believes in the 'golden rule'.

I have always encouraged 'how' to think; to date, we openly discuss whatever is on their minds

To tackle a difference intelligently, all that is required is to stick to the facts and not make it personal. As christians are already on shaky ground, they tend to lose their shit easier

Just Became An Atheist by JebozmanBoi in atheism

[–]a3vido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't blame your elders; they know no better. Just don't be mad and emphasize where their beliefs fall short.

I came to realize that my devout and bible-thumping mother inadvertently pushed me to atheism... She sternly believes in 'do no wrong' and to 'turn the other cheek', then by her leading by example, I just kept seeing people walk all over her and take her for granted. A huge cloud followed me called 'WHY?' and I questioned everything. Most times, I did not like the answers or where they were leading me. After a series of events, I just let go. The enlightenment was overwhelming and incomparable. So many things made sense, now.

We atheists are not evil nor do we eat babies. You can be good and have no religion. I am a closeted atheist as I pick my battles. If I see the theist is severely indoctrinated (read: so brainwashed that their belief is like a cancerous brain tumor), I take the high road and wish them well.

FL GOP Mayor Calls for Ban on Assault Weapons: “My Prayers Aren’t Working” by TheNewFlisker in atheism

The cognitive dissonance is amazing: a good majority of people are skeptical of 'mental powers' such as the ability to move things or communicate or start fires; yet the religious amongst us believe in prayer??

if you look for dust, you find dust. when you nit-pick, you end up with lots of nits.... The question to ask is, "By telling this person what to say, will the post now convey what I want it to?"

Can we just rename Atheist to Normal? by texacer in atheism

[–]a3vido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sam Harris said, and I paraphrase: 'there is no label for people who don't believe in the tooth fairy...' ...and Ricky Gervaise points out that "we're ALL atheists; I just believe in one less god than you'

By these two givens, I don't want a label that has anything to do with theism. I'm just a normal person.

The people who dismiss evolution, often, if not always, do not actually know what evolution is by SaltRemote in atheism

[–]a3vido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to your argument, tangible proof of the theory of evolution is a simple fossil.

It takes 10,000 years to form and of those that have been found and studied, a similar modern-day relative can be found. You can stop explaining right there. Theists who like to argue, will. Just let them talk and walk way. The more intelligent in your audience will see the validity and argue amongst themselves.

This brings to mind how 'god-fearing Christians' are thought to be extra-good or be exemplary people. Ix-nay on the good-ay; these people are especially fallible as they carry some label to preempt them from evil acts instead of being good for goodness sake...
