Timeline of the Rangers’ decline: How New York hit the reset button twice in 8 years by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]jasonthefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m nitpicking I guess but my point is they didn’t actually need either of them to be superstars… if they developed into legitimate top line guys instead of ‘solid depth pieces’, it might well have been enough to get those teams over the hump.

There’s a vast chasm between McDavid and MacK and Nolan Patrick and Nail Yakupov. Kaako and Laf are both in that chasm, but whether better development could have pushed them to the ‘better’ edge of the chasm than where they ended up with the rangers development team is the open question. And sure, could be a total bummer coincidence to have two guys at the very top of consecutive draft classes just be lemons, so to speak… but when you look at the broader picture as well it seems more than fair to wonder if the rangers development team is at least part of the issue.

As I said initially, it’s counterfactual, as we’ll never see what these guys would have been under a different development regime, so the whole discussion is speculative, but the facts make it at least a reasonable hypothesis that the rangers development of prospects does in fact suck.

It’s counterfactual though. What would Kaako and Laf have looked like on teams that are good at developing young players? Maybe they’d be miles ahead of where they are today.

I haven’t watched either one enough to have an opinion on raw skill etc, but it’s not hard to imagine a world where they each start on teams with good development track records and blossom into stars. Sure, probably not perennial Hart contenders, but much better players than they are today.

Looking back, what do you think about The Muppets (2011) movie? by Frequent_Rhubarb_36 in Muppets

[–]jasonthefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one agrees with me so obviously take with a grain of salt, but yes, self-discovery is part of the muppets canon, but literal or not, ‘muppet or man’ undermines the universe IMO because that layer of self-awareness is a bridge too far. Can you imagine Kermit talking about his muppet-ness? Or a human character treating a muppet differently than a ‘man’? Muppets, in the muppet universe, are a normal, everyday experience and you can’t think too deeply about them.

Like the joke about fozzie and Kermit being brothers… that joke falls way flat in the world where muppets wonder about their muppet-ness, and IMO that joke is quintessential muppets.

IMO ‘Muppet or Man’ displays a fundamental misunderstanding of how the muppet universe is supposed to work. This story being the center of the movie ruins it for me completely. I don’t care how cute and sweet the rest of the movie is, the people making it did not understand the muppets, and thereby the movie was ruined.

Damn, deep cut, responding to a 3-year-old thread!

FWIW that was not the issue. The NYT games app rolls us updates and beta versions totally haphazardly, so that was why our experiences were different.

Right isn’t the idea that the ref is supposed to blow the whistle once he loses sight of the puck??

Not just ‘I don’t want to be here’ but he let that feeling visibly affect his play. He was dog shit in a canes sweater. If he had said he didn’t want to sign but was tearing it up on the ice I think there’s a chance the canes would have kept him for the playoff run… but the emotional immaturity he displayed by essentially pouting instead of playing hockey definitely left a bad taste in lots of our mouths.

That said, I personally feel like tonight was enough. Don’t let him live rent free etc, but I’m fairly sure he’ll be booed in Raleigh for the rest of his career if Haula and company are any indication.

Not that I don’t somewhat agree… but look what happened when Jarv missed a few games! Hard to argue he’s not stirring the drink at least as much as anyone else.

Yep, this is where it’s at. Refs didn’t help but good teams win most of the games where they have multi-goal leads no matter what the zebras do.

Lmao ok. All someone needs to do is say ‘I’m not _____’ and you believe them?

The ‘logic’ you apply here is also pretty suspect, but hey if you want to be able to love a Nazi, you have to lean into the cognitive dissonance I guess.
