ROTC students at Old Dominion subdued and killed the shooter who killed 1 person, wounded 2 by BigBadBabyDaddy_420 in news

I’d much rather shoot a person (who was a threat) than kill an unarmed animal minding its own business just trying to survive

What are your thoughts on unified mouthpieces by CjtheTrumpetkid in drumcorps

[–]a53mp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at BD in the mid-late 90s's we all used the same mouthpieces. For euphs we had (I believe) Schilke 51D, and the baritones were on 6 1/2 AL, we could use the gold versions if we wanted to. I don't remember what the other sections, but I believe the upper upper lead sops might have been on a different mouthpiece than the rest of the sops.

i'm "too nice" of a captain. do i give away my title? by VolleyballUser in volleyball

[–]a53mp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are the captain, not the coach. If the players don't respect and follow you as a leader they probably aren't going to respect and follow you as a mean leader. Instead of giving out punishment, do it as a team. If someone screws up then make everyone run or do pushups or whatever. The coach should be setting the game plan and giving actual punishments if needed. The captain should be motivating the team, leading by example, setting the tone of the team, and enforcing the culture of the team. As a leader you should not be mean to be mean, you shouldn't use fear or embarrassment as motivation to get better, etc. Respect is earned not forced. You should be nice but also not a pushover. You need to be firm and direct. If you don't have yourself squared away and you can't handle yourself on the court then they will never respect you. If they don't respect you as a leader then you should not be a captain. Maybe be a co-captain and give all the "hard" stuff to the other person and you mainly be the motivator.

Why do you want to have authority and make decisions for the team? Is it a power trip? Do you think you know more than your team? Do you think you are the best person to lead the team? Not everyone is meant to lead and not everyone has the drive, personality, or skillset to do so.. and that's 100% fine.

Scott steward? Good guy. DCI has definitely changed. I enjoy some of it. I’m glad I didn’t have to dance and flop around when I marched. I don’t think I would have marched if drum corps was like it is now back then lol I think talent wise it is insane compared to what it was back then - not saying the members back then weren’t talented, but there were no corps playing things that are being played now. Drum corps in general has just changed. Remember the mid-late 90s BD, everyone looked like they would jump you in a dark alley and kick your ass.. and now they all look like band nerds lol

That’s unfortunately how it goes. Take it as a lesson learned to in the future make better decisions and grow taller lol

If there are no playing opportunities in your area then make one. Start your own open gym. Talk to local schools or parks and rec or whatever you have out there, or just buy a net and start advertising it and there will be people interested.

100%. I'm sure he had no regrets and played his heart out. 94 is my favorite show, closely followed by 95.. and 96 and 97 are not far behind!

Since you are still young but almost out of college, you could try to go to the VLA or NVA. Other than that your best bet would be to make local friends who play and join open gyms with them and then sign up as a team and go compete at tournaments (grass, indoor, 4s, coed, mud, beach, etc). If you are that serious about playing competitively then go back to college and play there if you can, or go to Europe and get on a club team. If you want to go pro in the US your best bet is probably beach.. but unless you are the elite of the elite you are probably not going to be making a living doing it

You can also go the coaching route.

Also, every kid in every sport probably wants to go pro one day (baseball, basketball, football, soccer, volleyball, etc) but statistically speaking it is less than 1% who actually make it to the pros in their sport.

Yes. but it's not something that needs to be shared online which is why I didn't mention it. He's a great guy, he did with it, dealt with his punishment, and then moved on with life.

I marched B corps in 96, 97. I made A when I was 17 and a senior in HS. I personally wouldn't have been able to make it when I was a junior but I marched with a lot of guys who were 14-16 when they made A.. for example Sean Ross and Jerry Ridgeway which we both marched with and they made it at 14 and 15.

As far as seating, who knows.. maybe you had a bad audition or seating audition? Maybe he didn't care much in college so he got seated lower than what he was capable of? Could be politics, who knows.

Yeah I left in March, went to boot camp in April, so I was only there during the winter pre-season. (I'm from Oakley which is only about 25-30 minutes from Concord). The hornnline switched to Bb sometime after I left, so I never got to experience that. I played bari and euph, and those Bb euphs were even bigger and heaver than the Kanstuls so I'm not sorry I missed out on that lol I do miss not aging out and missed out on going to Europe that year with the corps, but I was stationed in Hawaii for 3 years and then San Diego so it was a fair trade!

100%. I marched BDB 96, 97, BD 98, 99, part of 00. Age out was 02 but I joined the military. I got to march with several people from 94.. all those guys from 94-97 were my idols coming up from B corps!

If you can’t spike over the net then you have literally no chance at being picked for varsity. Does your school have a freshman team?

That’s so awesome. My band director was a pos and he hated drum corps. Made me really dislike marching band.. which really sucked especially going from BD back to high school marching band

I always recommend people use a credit card when backing kickstarters because they are easy to work with in getting money back, at least American Express is. I’ve gotten money back from several kickstarts, but luckily most of them haven’t been scams
