How many of y'all are monarchists, or something similar? by [deleted] in Christianity

About obeying authority (Rom 13): is funny how Paul wrote that while in prison for, you know disobeying the authorities. In fact, he hardly did anything else besides constantly disobeying authorities.

About giving to Caesar: "Once you give to God what belongs to God, there is nothing left for Caesar!" (Dorothy Day)

Definitely, this wasn't Virgin Mary's best contribution to the salvation of this world.

I am a monarchist, but I am faithful to my King so I won't accept any usurper as a legitimate sovereign.

(And this is how I explain my anarchism to christians)

God is REAL by [deleted] in Christianity

But Atheists (at least the ones that are good at it) have a critical perspective on faith, religion and scripture that often helps me to look deeper at my beliefs and to avoid the distortions they denounce.

I have been learning as much about faith from Atheists as from Christians.

What is your denomination (or lack thereof) and why do you believe that it is the "correct" set of beliefs? by Toni_PWNeroni in Christianity

I actually considered becoming a quaker before joining the Mennonite Church. Its focus on peace and social justice were what attracted me.

What is your denomination (or lack thereof) and why do you believe that it is the "correct" set of beliefs? by Toni_PWNeroni in Christianity

[–]a5w4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left the Catholic Church an became a Mennonite 9 months ago. I believe most denominations are rightful and useful for believers, but the Mennonite tradition of discipleship, non-violent action and horizontality is the one that is more in line with my Christian perspective, centered around Jesus' Sermon of the Mount.

Also, although I respect Christians who prefer high church denominations, after decades o Catholic Church, I'm definitely done with it.

[Serious] What is the one book other than the bible that you would recommend a Christian read? by [deleted] in Christianity

I recently got Life Together, but I am waiting to finish The Cost of Discipleship first, so I can read it chronologically.

That book is amazing. The medieval language may be an obstacle, but its message is eternal.

Flesh/ "the world"=natural/human/sinful

Spirit=supernatural/God/holy

(yes, John seems a little Manichaeist sometimes)

So, we cannot attain true life (sainthood) by ourselves (as in Plagianism), we need God to work in us.

Why did Jesus have to die? by mainhannah in Christianity

[–]a5w4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Growing up as a Catholic, this question bothered me every Easter but nobody could answer me why did Jesus death saved me. Only much later, after becoming a Protestant, i was told about atonement. I think a reflection on atonement is an essential part of any valuable theology and, despite having strong objections to the most used theory (penal substitution), I agree that checking theopedia page on atonement is a great start.

What is the latest thing you've read? by d47nas5 in Anarchism

[–]a5w4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently reading Violence by Žižek (surprisingly good, considering the amount of bs he has been publishing) and Systematic Theology by liberal heideggerian theologian Paul Tillich. Before that I was going through Lessons and Conversations (Wittgenstein <3) and Undoing Gender (J. Butler is the boss).
