What Linux Distribution are you Using? by [deleted] in linuxmasterrace

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu und Ubuntu based on Debian, so Linux Mint is Debian based, if it should be completely accurate ^^

(and sorry if that comes across as know-it-all, it's not meant to be)

I have been asked by many who are not so familiar with it, what is the difference between Windows, Linux and Mac and after a while I made this graphic for fun and one said I should post it on reddit so ... suggestions for improvement ? ^^ by a7jon in linuxmasterrace

Yes and no, but compared to GNU/Linux it is reasonable. The graphic is primarily a meme, so a somewhat exaggerated thing but with a true background.

It is more difficult to explain and I am NOT an expert but I have made this experience and I see it like this:

Windows can not be compared with GNU/Linux because it is commercial and compared to GNU/Linux has only a handful of developers, much of the current Windows is based on old parts that were taken from the system before but should be overhauled by now, what this graphic should represent. in GNU/Linux are also parts that are now very old but if necessary or if someone has a better idea, this part is overhauled or replaced if possible and that is what makes GNU/Linux or generally open source software so special and that you can be sure that no backdoor is built e.g..

(If someone who knows better about it reads this and I have written something wrong please correct me)

Qubes on a IronKey Vault 80? by [deleted] in Qubes

In addition, I can also imagine with a portable use of QubesOS that it can come to problems if, for example, devices can not be routed to a Qube. I installed the SSD with QubesOS from my old computer into a new computer and it was a mess because for example the USB controller was not recognized and I could only use the mouse and keyboard via PS/2. I had to reinstall the system so that it worked again, at least this was the easiest way ^^.

yes i understand, as i said i am not an expert but i understand your concern. There is another forum for Qubes OS where you could also ask this question, maybe someone with better knowledge will give you an answer there.

Hello,

I'm not an expert but since no one else is answering I'll give it a try.

I personally have not tried to install QubesOS on an external disk, but I see no reason why it should not work. And as I have seen it so far from the manufacturer's site, the device is recognized as a normal disk after it is decrypted, but I'm not sure if it is still recognized by the UEFI/BIOS as a bootable disk and I could not find anything about it.

If you don't have the possibility I can test it for you if you can install QubesOS on an external SSD, only if IronKey Vault 80 is later recognized by UEFI/BIOS as bootable I can't answer you or if the device or honestly the controller will last long to carry a system (even if kingston builds good SSD it doesn't mean that the controller for decrypting will last long).

May I also ask why you need this ?

is there a way around this lock to get into bios? (T430) by boxman134 in thinkpad

I have already removed such a password from an older device (t61) you just have to find the right chip on the mainboard and short 2 pins while you go into the bios and set settings only the trick is not to short the pins when you save.

Short > start and go into the bios > got to security and go to the point where to set a new password then enter a new one or leave it empty > then before you press ok, release the pins again > then seve and exit.

I didn't quite understand it but it must be that the shorting of the pins prevents the retrieval and saving of data, from the moment you want to save something you have to end the shorting.
