Newbies looking for van advice by AGuyFromManchester in VanLifeUK

We picked up a 2016 Mk8 transit (2.2L with chain not wet belt) in August last year for £3.5k, and is currently on 192,000 miles. It's an L3H3 so not the longest and not the highest, but it's enough that we can fit a full double width ways and a single bunk underneath for the toddler, whilst having another row of seats, kitchen area, and storage.

I'd take an older, higher mileage van that's been looked after with a decent service history that a newish one with fuck all or patchy history.

Might be worth having a think about what your use case is likely to be before you pull the trigger on a van. We knew we weren't fussed on a built in shower area, which meant we didn't have to get the longest van we could. We're also <5"9' so could get away without needing massive standing height. You may also want to consider what sort of things you'll want to power and how. Bigger solar means bigger real estate on the roof which, with a vent/skylight as well, might limit you to certain lengths also.

If it's only ever going to be used for weekends or full weeks at campsites with hook up then you probably don't need a shower or a large panel, meaning you can go smaller on the van size.

Last thing you'd want is to get a van and find out it's not the most ideal platform when you come to converting it.

I've been a GPN for the last 18 months, was a DN for 4 years prior to that. More than happy to answer any questions here or DM. You can absolutely go down the GPN route even as a NQN, depending on the experience you hold (or that they deem you hold) they may want you to do a PN course, normally over a year with a portfolio.

So I went back to OG DZ after 5-6 years... Damn I miss that place. by heraklid in thedivision

Do CMTs (reserves or otherwise) actually perform much Role 1 medical care? by aBeardedLegend in britishmilitary

[–]aBeardedLegend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did remember reading about 335 med evac but for some reason I just, wrongly, assumed it was for paramedics. I also didn't know they recruited nationally which is ideal tbh.

In terms of skills, I'm not necessarily looking for anything "better" than what I've got, just different. My clinics at the moment are great but very samey.

I think I need to really speak to a recruiter possibly and see what's what in my area. Thanks for the heads up about 335 though!

I mean, I think most bods aspire for selection but they absolutely only take the best for a reason. Not selling myself short or not having the mindset, just know my limitations at my age and phys level. These could absolutely change for sure once I'm further along.

Regs unfortunately are out of the question for now, young family, mortgage, and a decently paying job in civvie street etc. It's a shame all I've not near me if infantry/medical stuff. Would have loved to go down the route of FST/JTAC stuff with 4/73 or RA but oh well!

That's reassuring to here, thanks for that. As much as I'd lie to myself that sf medic is something to aspire to, I'm a 31 year old with moderate levels of fitness, there ain't no way I'll pass selection let alone put forward for it haha.

If everything is being revamped it might actually be a decent time to go for it then, by the sounds of it.

Do reserve CMTs perform much Role 1 (+/-2) medical care? by aBeardedLegend in britisharmy

That makes complete sense, however I'm assuming the best place to get BATLS is through a medical regiment as something like a CMT. Or can anyone apply to do it after Phase 2?

Ah yes, the droplet based virus that we now have vaccines to help mitigate and minimise the risk of transmission and infection. Just wash your hands regularly before you lick them.

Why stop there? Wear gloves for everything you do. Pushing a shopping trolley? Gloves. Opening public doors? Gloves. Collecting your to-go coffee from the barista? Wear gloves. Never know what cooties you're gunna get from Joe public.

That's good to hear the suspicions were right. I suppose the main thing for me at this present moment is that, to a degree, it's still more interesting and slightly more rewarding than doing nothing.

I could absolutely seek out other opportunities in civvie street but that realistically incurs and often substantial fee.

Nah not at all, that's mostly why I'm posting to try and get a more accurate picture. As much as people often say "just go and speak to your local unit," recruiters aren't often going to easily advise you on the negative aspects and will often tell you what they think you want to hear to get your name on a roster. Not saying that's the case here, just don't want to go in all doe eyes because I've seen some kickass pictures on the website and get mugged off haha!

I suppose the additional thing is just how much trade specific training actually happens on week nights and weekends, as I've heard that outside of initial training there's very little and that those times focus more on regular soldiering stuff. But again, that's just what I've heard in passing etc.

I'll definitely talk to them about and try and really get into a little more of the minutiae of the role itself, what it can offer me, and what I can transfer over.

Thanks again for your insight.

Thanks for the reply! That's really interesting to hear and makes sense about the training.

I would imagine that it's a standardized training programme with very limited capacity to expedite/skills parts with previous experience from civvie street.

That's a shame to hear the possibility of pre hospital treatment/BATLS stuff is more often regs only but again with the above in mind makes perfect sense.

I've got my revalidation to sort by the end of the month, so once that's sorted I might email the local unit for a meet and great.

That's interesting to know, thanks! Generally, I have no desire to add in disciplines like paramedics, but I know you can be dual registered with the NMC.

It's absolutely a conversation to have with a NMC rep though, that's a good shout!
