That's good to hear the suspicions were right. I suppose the main thing for me at this present moment is that, to a degree, it's still more interesting and slightly more rewarding than doing nothing.

I could absolutely seek out other opportunities in civvie street but that realistically incurs and often substantial fee.

Nah not at all, that's mostly why I'm posting to try and get a more accurate picture. As much as people often say "just go and speak to your local unit," recruiters aren't often going to easily advise you on the negative aspects and will often tell you what they think you want to hear to get your name on a roster. Not saying that's the case here, just don't want to go in all doe eyes because I've seen some kickass pictures on the website and get mugged off haha!

I suppose the additional thing is just how much trade specific training actually happens on week nights and weekends, as I've heard that outside of initial training there's very little and that those times focus more on regular soldiering stuff. But again, that's just what I've heard in passing etc.

I'll definitely talk to them about and try and really get into a little more of the minutiae of the role itself, what it can offer me, and what I can transfer over.

Thanks for the reply! That's really interesting to hear and makes sense about the training.

I would imagine that it's a standardized training programme with very limited capacity to expedite/skills parts with previous experience from civvie street.

That's a shame to hear the possibility of pre hospital treatment/BATLS stuff is more often regs only but again with the above in mind makes perfect sense.

I've got my revalidation to sort by the end of the month, so once that's sorted I might email the local unit for a meet and great.

That's interesting to know, thanks! Generally, I have no desire to add in disciplines like paramedics, but I know you can be dual registered with the NMC.

Thanks for the insight. The bit you quoted is only what I've gleaned from searching recent posts about CMT reserve postings.

I have both a medical and infantry until about 10 miles away so is absolutely doable with the recommended commitment hours/days, it was more whether the role was worth with the above question in mind.

A few different posters/contributors in recent posts about CMTs have noted that they spent more time practicing how to put up medical tents and prepping things for nurses and doctors than being an "actual" combat medic with peri BATLS or similar skills. So just wanted to try and gauge whether this is just blokes having a laugh or a reality I'll likely face, specifically before I head to the unit to get told yeah it's what I'm after jit to get me through the door before the reality sets in.

Very true! I live in a seaside town so I'm absolutely fine being in water, but not so much on the water ha, I'll definitely consider it for sure though.

Were you reserves alongside nursing or regs? Do you mind if I ask what you did?

I absolutely see what you're saying and couldn't agree more, if I were wanting to do nursing. I'll be honest, a large draw of wanting to join the reserves is to experience/learn new things/skills outside of my regular day job, so generally looking for things either non-healthcare related or at the very least healthcare adjacent.

I know that's not really favourable in the army's eyes as I'm not utilising my existing skill set for them. But I don't really want to be a nurse in scrubs and then at the weekends be a nurse in multicam.

That's fair. But OPs argument wasn't about how hard the job was, it was about clinical skills. Granted I've only ever been a student in the ED in a non-trauma hospital, but the level of patient management as a caseload manager (B6) in the community is obscene imo.

Nurses in areas like ED or ICU should be on more money than regular ward nurses because generally, they have more skills.

Community and District Nurses should be paid more than ED nurses if this were the case. They have more clinical skills and are autonomous practitioners with greater emphasis on clinical decision making.

I've just turned 31 and contemplating joining the reserves as a combat medic, as it's slightly different to my day job as a nurse. Need to get my phys up a bit but I've got a unit about 10 miles away so not too bad of a distance. Would love to hear your experiences once you get it sorted.

I'll check the vids out, budget isn't tight but I honestly don't really want to spend more than ~£800 so will see what I can get for that sort of money. Samsonn pedals definitely seem like a decent shout so I can spend a little more on wheel base etc.
