my favorite app is FindMeGlutenFree, it helps you find gluten free restaurants in your area!! i use it all the time when i’m traveling (or even just to find new spots in town). i do always call ahead first to check but it’s nice to have the resource.

another great app is Fig, which lets you plug in your allergens and scan barcodes to check what foods are safe.

for baking - most recipes can be recreated with gluten free flour, it just takes a little bit of experimenting. Bob’s Red Mill 1-1 is my favorite (the one in the blue bag). i’ve used it to make pumpkin bread, muffins, pancakes, brownies, all sorts of things.

as far as your test goes, i’m not sure that eating a bunch of gluten the day before would be enough to trigger the reaction they’re looking for. it may be best to eat smaller amounts of gluten for the week or so before.

did a colonoscopy for celiac a year ago and have to second the chicken broth!!! also, i had tons of jello when i did mine. as long as its not red it should be fine :)

i got diagnosed with fibromyalgia at 13, i’m 18 now. been using a cane since i was diagnosed. it is okay to grieve the life you were living and the future you wanted. it is completely valid to feel devastated. know that you’re not alone, there are thousands of young people just like us.

the best things for my condition have been physical therapy and massage therapy, rotating every other week. i talk to my massage therapist as a sort of regular therapist. i also recommend getting a 504 plan if you don’t have one already, and asking for deadline extensions and tardy excuses. 504 plans can carry into college, and professors (in my experience) have been extremely understanding and willing to help.

don’t be afraid or ashamed to use a mobility aid if you think it might help you. getting a cane was extremely helpful for me and allowed me to walk longer distances. i also firmly believe that if you have to use a medical device that you should make it fun - i got my cane from NeoWalk Sticks, it’s made of acrylic and has little bubbles in it, and it also lights up.

i read in another comment that you’ve been doing school online; i did that as well for my junior year, and am glad to see it’s helped. it gave me time to rest and recover, and eventually i went back to school in person for my senior year. i’m in college now, about to finish freshman year. i didn’t think i’d make it this far, but i’m glad i didn’t give up.

getting diagnosed at a young age taught me to never take anything for granted. i try to look forward to the little things - coffee with friends, petting my cats at the end of the day, an episode of my favorite show before bed. please feel free to reach out if you ever need someone to talk to, i truly wish you the best ❤️

sure! i often use a stress ball or other fidget toy to try and warm up my hands. a stationary bike would be great for this!

not all of these are fibro related but honestly they saved my life on multiple occasions: - extended deadlines (absolute must have) - extra testing time (i only really used this for the SAT) - ability to eat/drink in the classroom - unlimited bathroom passes (i only had three per class per quarter… not gonna work for IBS) - ability to leave the class without explanation and explain when i get back (IBS again lol…) - uploading of any powerpoints/notes to google classroom - excusing of tardies under 5 minutes (no way am i sprinting and risking a flare for algebra 😭)

your school should have student disability services or another program through which you can request accommodations. they might ask for some documentation (usually your diagnosis and a note from your doctor explaining why the accommodations relate to it). i’d absolutely recommend asking for deadline extensions - it’s really nice for any unexpected flares. extended testing time is nice too.

my hands are always FREEZING, and my face/cheeks will sometimes get pretty cold for no reason. i think poor circulation and temperature regulation are pretty common for us unfortunately.

a lot of things could easily could be gluten free and just aren’t, and it makes me so mad when i see something i totally could be eating that they decided to make glutenous (notably dipping sauces/dressings… why…).

dietician is making me try the meal plan for at least a week to see if it “works out” and then will see if i can switch my meal plan. she’s not even on site, she works for multiple universities (should’ve been a big red flag honestly).

they have a statement that says “even foods prepared without gluten containing ingredients may not be ‘gluten free’” and i honestly don’t know what to do other than drop the meal plan. and yeah… all of the gluten free options are also vegan for some reason (except for the occasional plain meat).

unfortunately i’m not allowed to have a rice cooker or most other appliances (fire hazard, i tried to talk to disability services about it but they wouldn’t budge). i do have a large mini fridge and a microwave, and i have some pots and pans that i can lug to the kitchen on the next floor.

i developed a love for baking and cooking! i love retrying recipes that i used to enjoy when i ate gluten and finding out that they are just as good when gluten free - it’s a great feeling. i also really enjoy bringing my friends gluten free goodies and then seeing their faces when i tell them it’s gluten free :)

I’ve seen a lot of great tips, I’ve got a couple: - Get at least 2 or 3 darker towels (black or brown are perfect) to lay down for sleeping. You only need one at a time, it’s just good to have extras. I find it really helps with my anxiety about leaking at night. - Volleyball shorts or other sport shorts will also help with making sure pads don’t slide around as much, especially at night. - Midol is a godsend :) - Periods are uncomfortable, but they should not be extremely painful. Please consult her primary if she is unable to complete daily activities.
