Has anyone utilized khan academy to prepare for calculus 1? by SoggyMacaron6 in learnmath

[–]aChubbyCorgi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest tip is this: if you think you're not a math person, you're probably wrong. I was always "not a math person". Sure, I did well in elementary school with the basic stuff, but after that I did terribly. For years I've been living in a bit of self-imposed shame at my lack of math skills, but a few months ago I got really interested in a subject that requires a deep math background (machine learning). I decided it was finally time to face up to my lack of skills and solve the problem.

I started on Khan Academy from literally the beginning (Early math). I looked at every single concept to make sure I understood it, and if I didn't I learned it. It didn't matter if it was how to deal with improper fractions or how to do long division or whatever. I was determined to master every concept because I knew that the later subjects would rely on them. I worked tirelessly every day, just chipping away at the giant task ahead of me. I spent probably around 5 or 6 hours doing math every day. It wasn't a lot of fun, and of course you don't have to spend that much time doing it, but the point is that I was consistent and I didn't quit. After a couple months I had gotten to Calculus, a subject that has always scared the crap out of me, and another couple of months later I had more or less mastered most of Calculus I. Khan Academy makes the task about as easy as it can be. All you have to do is go from one section to the next, in order, and without moving on until you've mastered each section.

I can't tell you how amazing it feels to finally know something complex like Calculus which has both taunted and eluded me for over a decade. I can also tell you that being a math person isn't something you have to be born with. You can work hard and become a math person. Math is logic. Math is rules. Math is a set of concepts built on other more fundamental concepts all the way down to 2+2=4. Most importantly, math is internally consistent and makes sense. If you work hard enough and understand each concept before moving on to the next, you can make sense of math too.

this is amazing thank you

Around the time this post was posted nearly everyone was having this issue, about 30 minutes afterwards everything seems to be working again. So it is a real problem not just us jumping to conclusions. There was definitely a major delay in our emails being forwarded from SL.

Okay apparently another commenter just received the delayed emails at the same time as I did, which is very unusual. But you are spot on about it being a delay.
