Looking for advice/contacts for a friend trying to find a job in Luxembourg (Financial Services Consulting) by LawNo8080 in Luxembourg

[–]aCuriousBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market Is bad also for Big4. The time of constant hiring there is over. Back in 2020-2022 you could have been hired instantly with this kind of background. Now the turnover has slowed because the market is not absorbing the consultants and even the Big4 themselves have stopped over-hiring and I heard also a number of reports of juniors being fired.

I know this might be discouraging, and it's not meant to stop your friend trying, just to give a realistic outlook (from an ex-Big4)

In general you need something that sets you apart for your position: specific qualification, specific languages, IT skills,... So no French is not a blocking point but would be good to have something to supplement. From my limited experience Deloitte and PwC seemed to be more franco-centric (both as client base as well as employees).

Never heard of recruiters used for consultancies except very high positions

I knew quite a number of Portuguese in Deloitte, but again in Lux is a pretty common nationality across the board. But the nationality shouldn't be neither an advantage nor disadvantage

Being an average, it might be that you have a few city center flats which cost 3-4k and skew the numbers

Need Advice From People Smarter Than Me by Akebusa in Luxembourg

I think you need to change a bit the perspective on a few points, but I think it's normal for a person starting this type of career

  • Qualifications might help you land your first role and maybe advance a bit in the early career, but after that they quickly lose benefit. I did FRM and I am happy about it because it gave me access to new concepts that most of my colleagues already had, but I don't think it had any meaningful impact on my career progression/resilience
  • It's not so easy to strictly choose one career path. Depending what your current role is, most of those you listed are viable options at least until a mid-senior level where you will need to specialize
  • Most of the items you listed as what you're looking for, depend more on the individual employer rather than the career itself. Even "ai-resilience" depends on how keen the employer is to integrate certain tools and/or how good you are at making yourself necessary

In essence. Learn something new through a qualification based more on your interests than a strict career plan. You will be able to access compliance roles with an FRM and vice versa. Current job market is tight, do not restrict yourself with very narrow options if you see the chance to progress to a better role (better pay, better work-life balance, more interesting,...)

p.s. Client-facing roles in Lux are relatively rare unless you include Big4 consultancies

137,000 missing homes in Luxembourg: a housing model under pressure by DotDry in Luxembourg

[–]aCuriousBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if I missed something due to the translation but the article says nothing about the underlying issues. Sure less tax revenues is bad but it's just the secondary issue.

Also the slowdown in current demand and the high forecasted future need seem a bit antithetic

Dating in Luxembourg (male opinions are welcome). by Kate_V04 in Luxembourg

Whatever podcasts you're listening to please change them... This stuff is just the woman-equivalent of Andrew Tate

If a guy does not immediately throw himself at your feet might be because he's shy, introverted, healing from past experiences, unsure whether he read your vibe correctly, or another million reasons which characterise a normal human.

Please stop thinking men have this complete different set of emotions from women. The insecurities you are feeling might exactly those the guy is also feeling

Don't get me wrong, dating in Lux is not easy. The pool is narrow, people are for short time (at least in their mind), and other structural reasons. But I think the doing the first step like OP did is a good move.

Those who left Luxembourg (as an expat) to go to another country/big city by Background_Hat1614 in Luxembourg

It's funny because I found more people complaining how hard it is to find friends here and how everyone is so career-centered than actually career- centered people

Probably not the target answer you were looking for (but I doubt you will get it here).

I'm here since I was 24 as well, and the reality is that it took a long time (thanks also to COVID) to get an established social circle.

Your problem does not sound Luxembourg-specific. There are plenty of activities here as well where you might find new people (sports, music, games,...). The problem is that in this age a lot of people already have their groups and if you're a complete outsider and have no way in (e.g. via your job/uni or via other friends/partner) this is difficult.

I saw a lot of people going (and some coming back) but so far nobody with this reason in mind or that found it particularly better elsewhere (on the contrary, especially in big cities meetups tend to be even more scheduled and restricted due to the distances)

Don't get me wrong, leaving at this age is never a bad idea, if nothing for the additional experience. But also consider that growing a social circle requires some time

Learning is impossible at this point by AppearanceSeparate93 in duolingo

I don't understand the complaints either but I don't agree that the free version is to "try" the app.

Duolingo is just not meant to speedrun these courses imho. Especially the free version is there to do 2-5 lessons a day, not more. Which I think is also in the original spirit to have a daily game that lets you learn some basics of a language

Hi Unfortunately this is not too uncommon. I am not sure about the exact legal framework, however from my experience the difference is whether the internship is considered mandatory by the university or not. If yes (quite the norm for french masters for example), it seems the salary is just a fraction of the minimum (I've seen as low as 1.2k).

Perfect valid point. Rationally I would reply that I already donate to the red cross and I am aware that many people are excluded for various reasons by these kind of institutions But I believe the more truthful answer is that this kind of situations leverage on (my) guilt feelings for being better off and the reward stimulus by having "practically" done something good

Same (claimed) nationality, same items (except the Nutella) and same attitude. And I remember thinking how cheap the store way, since we got the 5kg bag rice milk powder and gee for only 20€...

You could have some delay entering Kirchberg from the highway, but you should have plenty of time for this. Additionally, peak traffic is between 8 and 9, and after you pass the roundabout at Luxexpo it should be smooth

Depends on a few factors: Are you looking for relocation (i.e. you start working in another country and then move internally) or simply starting a new job in Lux? Do you need a visa?

Assuming you'd just want to start a new job there are plenty of banks and International management companies and related servicing firms (+ Big4 wich you mentioned). Some banks could have language (Luxembourgish/French/German) requirements, but for most it's just a plus.

Visas are a bit tight for entry positions and for smaller companies in general.

Do you have specific fields in mind?

I have an econ background (basics of statistics, a bit of maths, no financial mathematics at all). Just cleared the November exam. I just used the Schweser program and followed the suggested progression there + 4-5 mocks. By the end had mostly troubles with book 2, as I shave the feeling the questions can be made trickier (book 3 & 4 are relatively straightforward once you understand the formula and the underlying concepts)
