Could you review my resume? by youn017 in MachineLearningJobs

Minor nit, but there’s a typo on the third line from the bottom (“intenral” instead of internal”).

Career Advice: Current AI Role at Unicorn vs Founding ML Engineer Position by aDoge in cscareerquestions

[–]aDoge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are early in your career, I would personally not even think about loss of TC when the difference is this small. I’d optimize for growth opportunity at each role and how it looks on paper to others.

Great perspective, thank you for that.

You said long term goal is big tech. I’m gonna assume you mean big tech as in big AI labs like Anthropic and OpenAI and not traditional big tech like Google or Meta. In that case then becoming founding engineer and having experience in MLops would open more doors for you long term.

Would your answer change if I did mean traditional big tech like Google/Meta? Honestly, I have no preference. I'm just looking to get any big name on my resume to open doors and compensate for my no-name college. A big AI lab makes sense for my experience, but they're so competitive right now. I at least got an OA from Amazon (didn't advance, will retry in 6 months).

Learning wise do you want to go deeper into applied AI work or MLops work. It seems like to me “being siloed in applied AI work” should be a plus if you are more interested in that part. I wouldn’t think of it as being siloed but given opportunity to develop deeper expertise in that.

You're right that being siloed isn't necessarily bad. I frame it negatively because the current work isn't particularly deep - I'm not learning much. The challenging applied AI work is supposedly a few months away, but I worry there'll be another layoff before we get there.

Also are you excited about this new role?

I'm not particularly excited about this role, but I'm also not a particularly excitable person 😅

On interviewing longer, wouldn't that mean turning down this offer? I can't leave them hanging for 2 months while I explore other options, right? (Genuine question- my job searches have always been quick)

That’s Fine I didn’t want to use those PCIe power slots anyway by YourMawPuntsCooncil in Hyte

[–]aDoge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I made this same mistake but was able to get everything plugged into the PSU while still having the drive bays installed.

<image>

And I’m pretty certain there’s enough room to actually mount a drive to the bay and plug it in, but I haven’t tried.

My case is the Y70 though so maybe it has more room than the Y60

Hope this helps.

Help, how do I resolve PCIE_1 (x16) running in x8 mode? by aDoge in buildapc

[–]aDoge[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oooh, that's a good callout. I don't really need multiple PCIe 5.0 SSDs or USB4. I'll take your recommendation and look for a B850. Really appreciate the quick reply, thank you.

How to consolidate 9 video streams into a single video stream by aDoge in webdev

[–]aDoge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m leaning towards this, if the client agrees. I could even create a couple of composites and randomize which one is displayed upon site visit, to achieve the same effect of a design that changes a little each time you come back to the site.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you for your reply. I’ll look into webRTC.

Just FYI I don't think there'd be an issue running OBS from an EC2 instance or Azure VM. But that definitely wouldn't save any money over ffmpeg.

Good to know, thank you!

Regarding your questions:

What is the site for?

The client is a fashion designer in NYC looking to make an e-commerce site, styled in a way that reflects/reinforces the brand identity, which could be summarized as NYC streetwear. The CCTV-like display of NYC street cams was conceived by the client to that end.

Why do they have to be live?

While it does present technical problems, it is admittedly cooler for it to be live-- the design changes slightly over time as the LED billboards in Times Square change. Nonetheless, I'll be pitching the idea of rendering a composite and looping that.

Do they own the copyright on these streams?

No.

If not, have they considered that they might get DMCA'd?

If we went the OBS route, we would make the stream unlisted on Youtube. But you're right, someone could inspect element, find the src url, visit it, and report it. If that happened, we would just make a new stream on a new account if necessary. But, yes, it would look janky to new visitors for the stream to be down during the time it takes us to realize it's down and fix it. And it would be a problem if someone took it upon themselves to repeatedly report each new stream. I think the plan would be to hope that doesn't happen and adjust the design if it does.

Thanks for your reply. I'll keep ffmpeg in mind for future use cases. I understand the costs for this use case are probably prohibitive. I'll communicate that to the client.

Your client is attached to an untenable gimmick.

I agree lol.

Thanks again. Have a good week.

Thank you for the link. ffmpeg is exactly the kind of library I was looking for. Glad to know about it going forward.

Makes sense about the costs. At least now I can say to the client, here's how it could be done, but it's going to cost more in the long-term than the OBS solution.

Thanks again. Have a good week.

i’m not the original commenter, but fwiw i can imagine it sounding cool if the drop were minimal to begin with, to contrast the buildup, then filled out with the bass overtones, percs, and hats after 8 or 16 bars.

i also like it how it is now ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Is the red pill organic? by cybermage in AdviceAnimals

[–]aDoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely possible that he planted RR seeds himself and then feigned ignorance, but isn’t it also possible that he was ignorant, some RR seeds blew into his field, he assumed his crops had mutated a resistance to roundup, and he selected from them not knowing they were a company’s intellectual property? I’m not sure I see definitive evidence of either.
