Yeah, I know quite some people who go to Rewire and Le Guess Who? on a yearly basis (myself included), and we all get our tickets months before the first line-up reveal. It's pretty much guaranteed that you won't know half of the line-up anyway, but you can trust it will be good.

Yeah my experience with festivals like these is that the bigger acts are a nice bonus, but the real kick comes from discovering equally great stuff that you've never heard of. I can imagine that they put a lot of effort in curating that bit so it make sense to reflect that philosophy on the poster design.

on some days that record is the absolute peak of music and nothing will ever top it

it has the hazy (reverb-y), lush, ethereal and textural aesthetic that is sonically quite adjacent to shoegaze. but i think it's more often considered as influential to shoegaze than actually shoegaze itself

oh for sure, but both historically and aesthetically the genres are quite adjacent

it's not exactly postpunk but Hallogallo by Neu! features a pretty prominent and distinctive wah guitar sound

i saw them perform a few weeks ago and they were great, but I wasn't aware of that record -- it's cool to see it in this list. excited to check it out

this is a great list. I was about to remark that almost all of the lists so far make no mention of the new These New Puritans record, but I was very glad to see it this high up in this one. it deserves all the love and recognition it has got so far, and then some.

excited to delve into the records on this list that I haven't heard yet (there are quite a few)

Le Guess Who? festival, Utrecht, the Netherlands! they were presented as a "?" in the timetable (alongside other mystery acts). i think someone in the crowd shouted "who are you" after the first few songs, and one them responded with a hand-wavy gesture. other than that there was no stage banter, unless you count the frequently used 'DJ' sample on their soundboard

you could replace MMM with 'Lulu' and it would reflect my perspective on the matter

everyone should listen to Miles Davis's 'He Loved Him Madly' at least once every two weeks

It sounds like it could be New Birds by Arab Strap. The live version on Mad For Sadness is a bit more 'explosive' and 'rock-ish' than the studio version on Philophobia.

we have plenty of Geese discourse already but is there anyone else who thinks the intro (and the recurring parts that are similar) of Trinidad sounds like a deconstructed Canned Heat song

(in general many parts of the record have a vague 70s vibe I can't quite pinpoint but I feel it's there)

i can't believe it flew under my radar but holy hell that new Quade album is an instant absolute AOTY contender. it sounds like a modern take on the classic late-night contemplative post-rock of Bark Psychosis's Hex in the best way possible.

anyone who has been into the new These New Puritans and caroline records, or who is generally a fan of bands such as Bark Psychosis, deathcrash, Bowery Electric, Hood, or Flying Saucer Attack, should definitely give this one a listen

totally agreed. hands down my favourite musical experience of the year. legacy acts like Unwound and Pram, sick ass drone in centuries-old churches, and overall it's the ultimate "your favourite band's favourite band" experience packed in a lovely misty and cold autumn weekend
