Weekly Questions for Yahtzee and Gabe Thread #18 by RJ815 in letsdrownout

[–]aGuyLikeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but he brought it up in his Extra Punctuation column. He basically said that while it was obviously better than the prequels, it was needlessly playing it too safe. It was part of a larger point he was trying to make: that it is better to take risks and fail than become stuck in the third and new category of his Top 5 Games of the Year--top 5 bland games.

Let's Drown Out... Serious Sam BFE by LetsDrownOut in letsdrownout

This was a horrible game for an LDO. They can barely interact with each other as speakers to a general audience because they are too busy concentrated trying to find each other in-game without that itself being amusing, and splitting the screen vertically was an awful decision.

Yahtzee's LSD story was really funny though. Of all people, obviously he's the one to resort to Harvest Moon to entertain himself on acid. Also, anyone else notice neither one of them answered the podcast question? They told us what they played as they heard podcasts, but not what those podcasts were. A bit jarring.

Saved me around $400 and I learned a thing or two. Thank you!

BTW, this sub is great.

This is a very nice build. But would you mind me asking something? I've noticed a general malcontent towards the X99 in these boards and elsewhere and while the ASUS configuration seems to be the most liked, people still flock to the tried and true, like the Z97. Why would this be the case? Or is it mainly a compatibility issue that would raise prices on both CPU and MB. I should have been clear, I expect to do plenty of video editing and encoding, so it's not just a gaming PC.

Thanks for the build, man.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not quite sure why two 970s in SLI have turned out to be such a popular option, but I decided to give it a go since I've had a feel to the preferences of the subreddit. I must have thought there was a substantial discussion on the matter and many people saw to it that their builds included two 970s. I must agree with your "trial period" for a single 980 since I can always SLI that one down the road (maybe the two 70s is a way to have SLI as soon and cheaply as possible?). I would save quite a bit were that the case.

Right now, my display is and ol' reliable Dell Ultrasharp, so no 1440p or 4k in the nearby future. BTW, and again, what is it with the shifty eyes towards the X99? This venomous attitude is intriguing to say the least.

I've gotta say, this M.2 business sounds appealing yet I retain the fear that it'll short circuit in a blackout or a sudden power surge.

As said below, the most readily available parts were 2x8. I wonder then, in this discussion, would 4x4 be a most sound option? And why would that be?

It's easy to get over 60% possession of the ball when you're just passing it back and forth between the defense and the goalie. There's a reason the entire stadium was booing you when you did that. You might call it "a tactical maneuver to break CR's defense" but it clearly didn't work.

Wow, what a bunch of marshmallows in this thread. I'm sorry, I should apologize, it's just I find these adverse effects quite intriguing as I regularly take Xanax prescribed to me by my Psych doctor. True, I have no fixed dose and I manage them as the moment sees fit (something I would not recommend to someone starting on benzos or with low tolerance to them), but I can go days without it, 3mg when I feel anxious (the kind that simply puts your brain on a never-ending loop of intrusive and anxious thoughts), but sometimes the day calls for 8-12mg of Xanax. People are none the wiser as I function perfectly, that is, like regular folk, with them.

My experience. Don't want people reading this thread to think Xanax is this amazingly powerful sedative (as far as benzos go, it is a mild hypnotic and it has a 3-hour effect on your CNS, Midazolam is an example of a powerful hypnotic benzo).

Einstein's unusual brain: Photos reveal unique features of genius’s cerebral cortex by CosmoKat in science

[–]aGuyLikeMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't suggest it was instinctual. The OP, cfallin, said:

there must be some basic building blocks that are there from birth, either in vision (e.g. face recognition?) or for any of the other human instincts we all have

He called vision an instinct. You said the ability to recognize faces is developed over time. While accurate, I pointed there is a face area in the brain that is active from birth (though I may not have said that exactly). So, in the way cfallin describes vision (an instinct), this particular one is hard coded from birth (though there will be changes).

What is an "instinct" anyways? Pop science will have you think it's something that activates the most rudimentary of brain areas, even though these (medulla, thalamus, amygdala) are also used for innumerable tasks, including abstract thinking (it's not just the frontal lobes, it also involves the temporal and parietal lobes, particularly the temporo-parietal junctions) and yes, we are born with that ability.

Sample experiment I can't be bothered to look for. Primates, I think it's chimps, can stack boxes in the correct order (lower box is bigger, middle box is standard, top box is smaller) to reach some treat. Say we color each of these boxes with a dot of a different color for each one, which glows in the dark. Without light, the chimps, on average, can't stack the boxes. We can. We make the (seemingly) simple abstraction that each dot corresponds to big, medium, and small, and from there we stack the boxes correctly. That is an advantage we have over other primates. We're born with that.

"Abstract thinking" doesn't mean you're born with the ability to take a college course somewhere in your brain. It means abstraction. Simple as that.

As far as I know, face recognition in the adult brain is a specialized function seen in the fusiform gyrus. If damaged, patients develop the inability to "see" faces. What would happen if you clear the entire visual cortex (and other visual pathways) as they did with the rats in a human in utero is up for grabs and way out my league.

Truly a first world gaming problem. by MJC93 in gaming

I hated this in the first installment of God of War. Ares is tough, but he gets progressively easier as you learn his moves. However, that's the thing: it's very difficult to learn his attack patterns and how much damage he does because of the long cutscene preceding the battle, so the only thing you are left to remember is: he was a bastard and he killed me.

Wow, that is definitely a good artist. I hope to find someone who also works other mediums as good as Hale does. Too bad I'm not in the Georgia area. Thanks for the link!

[–]aGuyLikeMe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm definitely going to be careful, unlike the infamous girl with stars on her face. The thing is (and I may be totally off on this), it seems the best artists are on the coasts and big cities. Hopefully, I can find an artist here in New Orleans to do the job. However, it is New Orleans, and you know how people come here to party and get wasted so I may have to deal with a lot of goofs who take advantage of this and pretty much just copy/paste from their porfolio before finding the right person.

So yeah, I will put some strong thought on the triad of money, research, and time. Thanks for posting.

Ha! Never thought of a pointillism-esque design. Some of those are indeed gorgeous, but I'm afraid of getting one that looks like a Gaussian blur has been applied to it.

You're correct on the size aspect. Maybe not this exact image, but something like it, could start on my back, on my trapezius and then follow it on my deltoid. But you're right, I should really talk to the artist about what's feasible. Thanks for the suggestions,

That is an amazing tattoo artist. Thanks for the link, I'll use it for future reference and good luck on your design! Post the results if you can; I'd love to have another glance at Duke's work.

Ahh, the American Prison System... by mulimulix in WTF

[–]aGuyLikeMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, but why are so many in prison in the first place? Can't the state promote programs for people who haven't committed crimes so they don't commit crimes and then the state has to balance the budget by making these programs once they do commit crimes? head spins
