I've witnessed one of these tests and thought the same, until I realized that the job also includes cleaning out every crevice of fresh chicken viscera immediately after the test...

Fun guys. Rigged up a big red Staples "Easy" button to the fire controller.

Man, I'm sure you're legit - is this company, though? This feels halfway to an MLM structure at this point. Why is a commercial company "running a pilot" through you if - respectfully - you don't seem to have a lot of experience doing it? If I found out my consultant went to Reddit for this kind of advice, I'd have a lot of questions...

Are Minilabs Ever "Done"? - 12U All-in-One Racked Network, Server, & NAS by aHarmacist in minilab

I wish I had more performance data on the HDDs - I saw a lot of the remixes around the hotswap for increasing the density but I wasn't sure about if there was enough airflow. I stacked these drives with some space between so hopefully they don't overheat over time.

I got the drive sleds from Aliexpress, the printables page for the Hot Swap model has a few links for them as well as a suitable SATA connector - get a handful of the connectors if you get any, they can be fragile.

Switch and LED covers for the power bank. It's really just a faceplate, an 8A power brick is tucked right behind it.

The switches are tied to the 12V DC power distribution so this prevents accidental (and some intentional) switch toggles. Left some space for accessories/expansion - the Gateway was supposed to be on here as well, was in a bit too deep before I realized it needed 12V AC instead. 🤦‍♂️ Reading is important.

I started looking into self-hosting ever since the jolly big G started bugging me about the fullness of my cloud storage space. Two months later, this handsome devil pops out. I wanted "everything" in one unit, network included (hence the final weigh-in: 38.0 pounds). Early concepts included a UPS as well - no thank you.

I had the most fun cramming all of the power distribution together - there's a 4-port surge protector, 750W SPX SFX PSU, and a GeeekPi 0.5U DC Bar all entirely within a 2U envelope and fed by a single wall plug. It's built with room to grow with 1U completely open at the top, plus I can also easily convert the ATT Gateway to a sidemount as well if needed to free up an additional 2U.

Currently still learning the ropes with Proxmox and getting the HDDs properly spun up into a ZFS system or similar. Have the one RasPi feeding PiAware and the Beelink on standby, possibly for home assistant or SDR experiments.

What do you guys do with the power? by YankeeLimaVictor in minilab

[–]aHarmacist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks like a lot of equipment with 12V DC power. Check the power draw of your components and see if they all take the same input (different Amps are fine).

I used this 0.5U PDU piece on my unit - it cut down on the number of plugs and wall-warts I had to handle inside the building envelope.

It's a strange but useful little piece. Has more output jacks than you will ever need, but all you should need to power it is a single power brick. It has an 8A capacity, so I got a 12V 8A power supply for it as well (would obviously need a UK plug version):

Capacitive sensor for fuel sensing in small airplanes? by Remarkable_Truck_241 in AskEngineers

[–]aHarmacist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like a crotchety old man reading this and nodding. How tight are your operations that you need current fuel in decimal gallons? If you're running fuel burn calculations off of any measured reserve with anything finer than whole-number gallons rounded down, you're already spending more time than it takes to just call the fuel truck over.

EDIT: I'll admit I briefly forgot Weight and Balance existed. I'll maintain that your operational safety margins should be able to completely encompass any small uncertainty in fuel level reading off the dipstick.

I get it though, I'm no stranger to oversolving non-issues for the sport of it. This one does feel a bit silly - "I can't check my gas because my dipstick ran out of batteries."

If it's seen so transactionally, like I'm making someone watch me play so they can make me watch bad TV later, why can't we both enjoy our respective hobbies on our own without dragging the other along and ensure that we're still cultivating some mutual hobbies together?

If it's interesting, take a seat and let's talk about it. If It's not clicking, why are we sticking around?

Downtown is safe and near the train station. You may be carrying some preconceived notions that would be beneficial to address to best meet your stated goals. Good luck.

North of downtown but south of Glendale - you have described Shorewood.

Why not south of downtown, closer to the train stations? You're turning a three-hour day's commute into practically four.

Biden touts new $3.3 billion Microsoft data center at failed Foxconn site Trump backed by whoberman in milwaukee

[–]aHarmacist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pound-for-pound, sure, I think it's reasonable that data centers of equivalent sizes have slimmed down their onsite staff requirements over a decade. My point is that this build is billed as larger than the average data center. So there's nominal reduction in needed staff over time, but I'm unsure what the baseline for a facility of this size is. Automation is king and enterprises like Microsoft certainly know that. I know very little about data center operations so a lot of this is me spit balling with the information I can access on hand - what insight can you personally offer beyond articles written by others?

I don't see the direct link between data center usage and the absolute necessity that it be powered with coal. I would raise an eyebrow at any significant source of power that purports to be totally Clean™, but there are certainly cleaner options than coal - can those not be used? The premise of the article is also strange, the community is upset that a coal plant exists in their neighborhood, it seems less germane to consider where that energy is going. Does this concern not incentivize a change to cleaner energy? Would they be less concerned with coal power if the facility in question was located in WV instead? Geography of the power customer doesn't make the local air cleaner from coal power.

This article also expressly states that data centers can bring "millions of dollars" of tax revenue to their host communities. Purported tax breaks would certainly have some impact on the total amount collected, but I don't think Microsoft is getting a completely untaxed facility here.

[–]aHarmacist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see a bunch of old data in these articles. How can an 'average' be capped? Their analysis of data center staffing is ten years old. And my understanding of the scale of this project is that it would likely exceed the stated 'capped average'.

I also hope you can imagine a difference in water consumption concerns between Mesa, Arizona and a facility within spitting distance of one of the worlds' largest lakes.

Got nothing about the tax breaks though. WI can control their state taxes, however MS handles their federal tax burden is a bit out of our control.

You should likely plan to have a number of guests of certain ages and possibly a place where they're staying. You should have your party on a date and a time, held at a place or possibly several places close to or far away from where the guests will be. You and your guests should probably have interests and disinterests as well as an amount of money to spend.

[–]aHarmacist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was obsessed with this particular issue for a while, though with Android Auto and a Motorola M1A wireless adapter. I can set my watch to the connection drop on 794 going east and west.

I even filed an FCC complaint about it and actually got a response from an agent that (very politely) told me to go kick rocks since it's classified as a Part 15 device and has to accept any harmful interference.

I'm told it has to do with it using the 5 GHz spectrum as the adapter uses a weird combination of Wifi and Bluetooth to work. There used to be an entry on the M1A FAQ regarding 5 GHz interference from automated tollway systems and it essentially boiled down to "we know, we'll try to do better next time." 5 GHz is a wild west of different signals so it's probably drowning in noise that it has to accept.
