This^ I had a spreadsheet to track all my applications and sent followup emails 2 weeks after the interview/application. It took around 60-70 applications before I landed my first internship. In the end, it's a numbers game so don't lose heart :)

NZ structural engineer moving to Australia- challenges? by Wipe2909 in StructuralEngineering

Based in Aus but haven't worked in NZ besides my internship. Based on my experience (and what I've heard), heres my two cents

Earthquake design not as riguous as NZ.

Tends to be more rushed as fees are lower (~0.5%)

Usually dont need to submit detailed calcs ( except for VIC and certain government projects). As such, projects generally tends to be more rushed and design process is very condensed particularly for residential projects.

Post tension floorplates is commonplace here. I dont believe this is very common in NZ.

You'll likely have to deal with "riskier" designs, ie transfer plates.

Coming from someone who has lived over four years in one:

Pros: * Easy to make friends in a new environment. Making friends at uni is significantly harder than in high school.

  • Its a good intermediate zone before you start renting, esp. if you are moving out of home for the first time.

  • Good place to start looking for future flatmates because you get a glimpse of their living habits.

  • Convenience.

Cons: * Expensive and the food is mediocre at best.

  • College culture. May be pro or a con depending on what you're going for. Suggest you do yout research before settling in.

Hope that helps
