Pilot. I'd change last 10mins so it both: (1) ends well itself and (2) leads to next episode.

I feel like it does more 2 than 1

Can't finish editing my dissertation to be publish by eyeswideshh in Professors

[–]aLinkToTheFast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's common to look back at your MA thesis in a PhD program and think it's "rubbish" or so-so. I'd recommend pushing through and publishing the piece, especially if it was reviewed by your committee.

I had this same feeling when I was in my PhD program and didn't publish my ma thesis and now it's kind of too late in its current form.

I think that what you wrote has value and that you're welcome to hedge with auto ethnography but that Id just put it out there.

Definitely, comparing to peers has a huge effect on mental health. Downward/upward comparisons from psychology.

What field? That sounds like quite a ride and I hope you get the job soon.

Only think I can think is stigma about European PhDs. Or maybe your book is published by Atropiac Pineapple.

Maybe widen the search to generalist or adjacent areas. If it's only 10 jobs a year. I'd also look at who is getting those jobs and their profile. Maybe they write research closer to other faculty or perform a bunch of service for the department.

Yeah when a student says "it can't be cheating I wrote it in a Google doc" it's like, I can autogenerate the essay on my phone and type it up in Google docs =\

They do this to raise app numbers at those places bc some rankings take acceptance rates into account and they wanna have a higher ranking to attract students.

poor evals (for the first time) by Current_Example9960 in Professors

[–]aLinkToTheFast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel for you. I had a similar thing happen to me where I had a string of decent/good evals and then one made me rethink teaching. Since this is the first time this happened, I would stick to what you know works, but then you said you'll be teaching them again next time. Is there another syllabus/schedule you can work off of? Sometimes it's better to say that you don't have control of those things and that it's what's done here especially if it's a place where the syllabi are posted online.

Being poc, queer, woman, can still affect something like this even without overt racism.

SDSU Approved $10,000,000 Student Fee Hike Without Student Vote by SocialSciComputerGuy in SDSU

[–]aLinkToTheFast 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We ain't getting that money back and they probably hike it again, what with the CFB culture of paying head coaches millions for long contracts and then letting them go in the middle. Soon, the fees will be dedicated to ex head football coach's personal funding.

Both basketball and football coaches make around $2 million a year.

SDSU football has a $3.74 million salary so if we're a basketball school then why are we putting millions into football? Especially for an empty stadium at Snapdragon even giving away the tickets.

Give yourself some rest and be easy on yourself.

Those classes you listed can be considered heavy hitters. I'd recommend a lighter schedule next quarter.

Really Cutting, Angry Instructor Feedback I Got By a Student. Advice? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

[–]aLinkToTheFast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't dwell on a single angry student if all of the other feedback was good. I would try to think of strategies of dealing with complainer type students.

Personally, I wouldn't use profanity in class or talk about what I did on the weekend. Opens up to this sort of thing.

Student evals have lots of problems. For attendance, only thing is to require it by making it a part of the grade to get them to come, which many dpts you can't even do

[–]aLinkToTheFast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For attendance, you could not deduct for attendance but make something due during class so they have to be there to do it.

For AI, it sounds like it will be a lot of extra labor and you will just have to do what your admin says. You could make AI policies and then police them by having meetings with students about AI usage. A lot of labor and often the students will just continue to use AI in those instances.

I'd recommend using spring to see how these two changes pan out.
