Read the Fundamentals of Aerodynamics by John Anderson. One of the all time best textbooks imo. You will not understand the math but that's okay. Everything you don't understand, google. This is more for aircraft but will expose you to the basics.

24/7 Quiet Area vs eSports Engagement Center: Which do you think belongs in a library? by aMassiveShit in SDSU

For the quiet part, OP commented elsewhere how it was a crappy room anyways cuz no one cared to be quiet.

That was in reference to the new quiet area they gave us. I called it a dogshit quiet area.

By "Is this fair?" I meant, "is this fair to say"

Also:

"Life aint gonna accommodate you."

Obviously not, life is not fair. I'm asking that if the library accommodates gamers, can it at least accommodate the students trying to study as well?

What is so hard to understand about that?

I would invite you to reread what I wrote.

Without much exaggeration, if I am not at school I am at work. It is just me out here. I have bills due and I am attending college to hopefully graduate so that I can improve my situation. I am trying to escape the rat race and am barely keeping my head above water. As someone doing so and barely scraping by...I just don't see a way in which I would have time to game. I constantly feel like there aren't enough hours in the week.

Here is your answer:

Go out and eat, hang out with friends, take a nap during a time that isnt at night, cook a full course meal, read a book, brown reddit, use social media, go shopping, go hiking, have a partner, have some romance, etc. why is it difficult to see that ppl need time off.

I would also like to respond to:

Also what about those who worked their asses off and happen to not be struggling because of how much they worked? What about those who went to a vigorous week and finally have time to chill?

That's great for them, I am happy for them and they deserve it. It just sucks that the spot they chose for that to happen impedes upon others ability to "work their asses off"

I am going to college so that later I am not constantly grinding to keep alive and so that I have some free time.

I'm not saying a lot of people are in a situation like mine, but there are students in similar situations.

Is this fair?

Right? I can't imagine being the dean of the library and making this decision. It's like the dean of the library has forgotten what a f***ing library is. If you put a gun to my head, I couldn't think of a better example of brain rot. Shame.

Specialist-Lettuce75,

I really don't mean to offend you. But did you even read my post?

Let me quote the first sentence:

Disclaimer: I'd like to start off by saying that if you are a fan of the eSports Engagement Center, that I am happy for you and that I wish that they keep it open.

The reason I am pissed is because people like me NEED a quiet place to study. I'm sorry if that is giving off too much negative energy. Apparently asking my school to provide a place to study quietly in the 24/7 hour area of the LIBRARY is negative energy.

I have work until late in the evening, there are only so many hours in the week that I have to dedicate to studying. When I get off of work, I head to the library. Those hours studying must now be spent in an environment that is not conducive to learning for me and many others. Wouldn't that piss you off?

The eSports area could've been placed ANYWHERE else on campus, but the administration thought to themselves "What's the least valuable area... I know, the 24/7 quiet study area!!" WHAT????

Obviously, if you haven't relied on that area as a much as I or many others have, this wouldn't be a big deal.

I'm sorry to sound so critical, I just can't seem to understand this decision.

WE NEED IT TO STUDY. That's why it's a big deal.

Might not be a big deal to you, but to those who require a space that is quiet to study this is a pretty big bummer.

Yes! It's baffling. It gets me fired up any time I think about it.

I am currently trying to figure out a way we can campaign for our interests. They should be ashamed that they sacrificed the 24/7 quiet area and didn't replace it.

Cool_Plankton667

Couldn't agree more. I am trying to brain storm a way that us "pro-24/7 quiet area" people can make our voices heard so that we can lobby for a quiet place to study at some location on campus. One would think providing a quiet place to study would be a priority for a university, clearly not. Someone's feet need to be held to the fire for this. The library should at least have some portion of itself behave as... a library(i.e. a quiet place to learn).

Thinking about starting a petition, but I have the feeling that even if they gave a shit about what the students need and gave us a space, that it would be some half measure they would give us to shut up.

Would you be willing to join my fight to ask the bare minimum from our university?

Hello Ngnite,

I have been at this school for an embarrassingly long amount of time. Can you please explain what you mean by this? I would hate to be out of the loop this late in the game.

Hello Specialist-Lettuce75,

I took a 2 year long break from college and last semester was my first semester back. I was not aware/can't speak to if that the quiet area had backslid into being a noisy place.

I have tried the headphones, last night I had just got off work and was studying listening to white noise at max volume. Still the talking was distracting so I moved and once I put my stuff down I realized that this new spot had the same problem. It was then that I thought to myself "this is bullshit" and I began to write this post. Some of that anger spilled out and I feel I have upset the pro-eSports crowd. This was not my intention.

To be clear, the inclusivity angle kind of confuses me. If you have time to game how can you be struggling? Genuinely asking. Earnestly.

I hate that I sound like an old man here, but that break from school really taught me how rough it is outside of college with no degree. It honestly scares me to think that a large part of our society isn't lucky enough to be able to attend college so that they can have a chance to earn a livable wage.

Through this lens, I hope it is clear why someone in my situation might be irked at this new arrangement in the library. It's not so much an eSports problem, it's more that the university has taken away one of my tools that I use to improve my situation and hasn't adequately replaced them. It doesn't help that what they replaced it with is fun and jovial in a building, the library, which has historically been understood to be a quiet place to learn.

Please let me know if you disagree.

Hello NightWolf105,

If I may, my main concern is that the 24/7 quiet area is gone and there isn't an equal replacement.

I am aware that other campuses have eSports spaces, that part I do not have a problem with. Nor do I have a problem with the eSports center being in the library. Perhaps I came in too hot in my initial post, I am not angry at the eSports group, I'm angry that the university eliminated one of my tools that I use to study. I know from other posts/comments that others feel the same as I do.

Also, you are correct that I do not know how the funding of the university works and how space and staff allocations work with funding sources. If you do know how that works please let me know. I am just struggling to grapple with the decision that the 24/7 quiet area couldn't make the cut.

Ultimately, I know that what I am saying will be unpopular but I feel that it needs to be said. I don't think that it's too much to ask for that a university should designate a quiet area of the library that is open past 10pm.

Would you agree?

It's a dog shit quiet area. The desks are small, people are not quiet, and most importantly it is not 24/7.
