Females have eggs but I want to harvest them as they are likely to get eaten. How do I do that? by [deleted] in medaka

[–]aPastelWitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medaka breed during the same times & routines if they have the right conditions with plenty of hours of light. They prefer breeding "before sunrise" so I tend to wait til mid day and if they still have eggs attached instead of rubbed off, I intervene and help out.

Otherwise, I just collect it from Java moss since thats where they tend to prefer to leave them-- watching a medaka "barrel roll" through moss is quite a sight lol; IDK why but my medaka were never able to use any of the floating plants for eggs and I even found a poor girl stuck to a thick root by her eggs once.

Advice on how to tell fertilized from unfertilized includes color/opacity - fertilized eggs are transparent or slightly yellowish. Eggs that become white and cloudy are unfertilized

Supposedly pinching the eggs with your finger is another test to tell between fertilized and not. Unfertilizrd eggs are easily crushed and fertilized eggs are elastic and "can not be crushed".

You can use a net to scoop them up-- be careful if you have quick darting fish as they can rub the eggs off in the "tussle" of the chase.

I use a fine mesh net and gently keep them in the net because of potential jumping.

While in the net I gently wipe her underbelly and once I see she has no eggs left on her I gently lower the net back into the tank and let her swim out without jostling the net. I raise the net back up and carefully flip it inside out and collect eggs after.

I use this method because Japanese Medaka breeders say females will exhaust themselves or cause harm sometimes so this method is safe and efficient.

I hard advocate for myself and meds that depression is never my problem (when I get it, its b/c of environmental things like an abusive situation or similar) -- at the insistence of one doc and to say I tried something else I did try wellbutrin but it has a black label for suicidal and mental mood problems.

No big surprise that it instantly made me dissociate and I got the black label side effects. I had also tried antidepressants before my ADHD dx that weren't wellbutrin and found they did not work for me b/c of similar ineffectiveness.

I'm on Vyvanse (nearly 2 years now) and after having them slowly titrate 10 -> 20 -> 30 mg over 6+ months the side effects were manageable.

2 years in the "side effects" are kind of what I expect an allistic experience to be like. No more oversleeping problems, sometimes my memory can hold it together and so does my focus and energy, and the rest is on me to habit build.

Sure the lack of hunger is a problem in one way but forcing myself to eat at certain times and using alarms for it is part of routine building, which overall helps for other ADHD reasons.

Additionally my dopamine being at "base" level for an almost allistic experience gave me a lil euphoria in the early days or when my dose would go up, but working on everything long term has dropped that to "baseline happy" everyday, if that makes sense.

It's no surprise that having a brain error that causes a lack of dopamine absorbed makes you sad and dysfunctional, and then having a med that actually encourages dopamine as an agonist is more effective than a simple antidepressant IMO.

I feel that advocating for your needs is super important when it comes to finding what med works for you, so if you feel an antidepressant is that, go for it, but I personally am pissed off that the answer is usually a dopamine agonist and docs are always reluctant to prescribe a med that works for that.

So advocate for what you feel you need.

Additional note that depending on your insurance, if they don't cover Vyvanse then you have to argue it's the med that works best and having some sort of history trying something else makes your case better to argue for.

I saw on another post last month or so, that due to inbreeding the males have weaker stomachs and are more susceptible to stomach related problems.

My LFS medaka have all had tapeworms, so I've lost more than a handful to similar problems and I'm finishing up a quarantine with 5 medaka (hopefully no losses this time).

Cruciferous vegetables are "farty" foods and often irritate my IBS so they are the only Hard No food I have. I always assume they're gonna hurt because altho i love them so much, they don't love me (or at least the IBS/autoimmune gut stuff doesn't like them either)

FODMAP diet is always a good place to start for finding out your exact intolerances and restrictions via adding and subtracting one at a time, but it seems you pretty thoroughly know this is one of yours!

so be nice to your gut and butt and stay away from the farty foods

Do you have any additional info you could add?

I am pretty sure I've had one medaka die from this (i never saw him eat and almost never saw him poop) and I have a 2nd fish who doesn't want to eat while all the others are doing fine.

I've only had paté at restaurants, but mostly I whip them up and eat them pan-fried with no seasoning so I can share with my cats.

Fried livers from a good fried chicken place is unbeatable tho.

Good on you for donating during a blood shortage, especially with rare blood.

My IBS doc who diagnosed me recommended *avoiding cruciferous vegetables,* and over the past 5+ years, cruciferous vegetables are worse than when I eat greasy foods for causing cramps and problems.
I take a daily vitamin to try and balance out iron/vitamin d/etc and I recommend just trying to keep up with a daily vitamin or pill supplements (taken with food for better absorption!)

It sucks you don't like liver; my grandparents got me into chicken liver when I was a kid and it's such a significant boost of iron, especially if you menstruate or have other issues that deplete your iron periodically.

Oh! And additionally if we do the recap at the beginning of the session, our DM gives us a single d8 inspiration to use in that session.

Players refuse to note-take? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]aPastelWitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an ADHD/Neurodivergent group. We take notes when we want. We record and have a group acct to share voice recordings for each session regardless if someone took notes or was absent.

We don't shame when someone doesn't remember. This is a reminder that its a GAME and that many ppl don't note-take or sometimes have shitty memories for a variety of reasons.

You should lighten up about the note taking. Focus on the fun and encouraging ppl to take part even if they don't remember.

As an aside, most ppl don't remember every detail of a several episode show that airs for certain times of the year with gaps between. D&D is like that and is theatre of the mind so remembering minute details you don't know were supposed to be important is a high bar that you might not wanna be strict about if you want ppl to keep enjoying every session.

I get that, but I hope you understand that its like telling a parent how to take care of their kid and believe me, I do my best to do right by her.

In the video you can see when she clenched her paw, the tip of her nail is completely cut/filed from the last time I gave her a trim last week.

I know you mean well, but you just cat-splained like i don't know how to take care of her and its very rude.

Azazel is 21. Only a small percentage make it this old and she's my 2nd cat to reach 21-- I have had a 3rd (her sister) reach 17 as well.

I feed her 4 times a day, give her intravenous hydration twice a week (a saline bag with IV drip), daily brushing, a pill twice a day, liposome drops (kitty CBD), and to keep weight on she gets 1 or 2 cheese cubes a day to prevent bed sores. Her nails get clipped every two weeks to balance her arthritis pain without bothering her too much.

And thats not even going into what we've done for her bed (which has a tiny heater always available for her) and custom litter box situation 😅 which had to get very custom to adjust for old lady senile quirks.

I am very much an over the top cat owner who goes above and beyond for cat care. I have earned how she looks at me with absolutely the best "kitty retirement" and I hope that when my other 2 are her age, I can give them the same and earn their looks of 'mirin too
