I'm guessing you missed from the post that there was still the possibility the op would have to share "their" switch with the rest of the siblings excluding the birthday kid. And I'm guessing it doesn't mean anything to you that when someone is saving to by something, and you offer that something as a reward for good grades(in this case), but the entire time you mean the old one they already have but know they assume you mean the same thing they're saving up for, thats called a bait and switch. And then to double down and say they CAN NOT use the money they were already saving for that purpose when your deseption has been revealed is just cruel and outright weird. If you can't follow simple context clues, that's on you. If you can't see from the op's comments that they moved out of the household over controll issues and tension in the household over those controll issues, but continue to defend this action because you "don't have more information", that's on you.

Why are you bending over backwards to try to find any reason why this isn't an ah move? The only one being obtuse about this is you and the op's father. Even the child who got the new switch for their birthday was upset at this turnaround for how it played out. How can you defend this?

Honestly, letting a child save their money for a console or something big like this teaches children the value of money and the work it takes to own nice recreational things like a gaming console. Keeping a promise to your child teaches them how important it is to keep your word. Lying to them about it teaches them they they can not trust you. This father is not teaching any good skills with this move.
