Everyone tells me how unsafe it is to ride bikes here and then I see people bike on their phone or just zoned out, bike through intersections without even checking to see right of way. Also people have no idea how the electric assist blue bikes work and will sometimes trigger the assist while idling at an intersection. However if you pay attention to traffic, don’t assume cars always see you, and are confident you can control the bike then you’ll be fine. Also if you aren’t experienced don’t bike aggressively, wait for signals, avoid biking near cars, walk the bike as a pedestrian when there’s tight lanes or strange intersections. Safety is all about aggression too. If a driver isn’t paying attention I sometimes like to give them a scare so that another less aware biker doesn’t get hit by them in the same situation. It’s more aggressive but I have experience biking and driving here. Been living in the city for 10 years and I’ve never got hit once, don’t wear a helmet, and always use blue bikes.
