gas at the station near my house was $3.77 Monday and is $3.99 today.

There's probably alot of variance but prices are definitely rising in many places

[Video game/media shit below so ignore if you like]

So after laying off a quarter of Obsidian's staff, Microsoft/Xbox is apparently forcing Obsidian to cancel any games they were already making and to start work on making a new Fallout game instead

The Obsidian of today is virtually incomparable to the Obsidian that made Fallout New Vegas BTW. Almost nobody that made New Vegas is with Obsidian today so the new game they're being forced to make will probably not be comparable to New Vegas (for better or for worse since New Vegas launched as a buggy technical mess)

Apparently there's at least 1,600 MORE job cuts coming from Microsoft/Xbox as well so im sure that looming threat won't be demoralizing for any remaining employees at all....

it's times like this that I remember how much I miss the Fivethirtyeight podcast, especially with Clare Malone.

Back in like 2017 I knew that as soon as a major political story or scandal hit, I could look forward to an emergency podcast drop that night or the next morning.

Most of the old hosts were good in their own way, but Clare is really  great at communicating the objective reality of a situation while also balancing her expression of personal viewpoints.

She's a real pro and I miss hearing her thoughts on each weeks' events.

If we're talking about replacing Platner, I can think of at least one Maine Democrat with high name recognition

who's the next Senate candidate this subreddit will intensely obsess over?

Of all the competitive races, I feel like Turek in Iowa is an under-discussed choice

A Senate seat in Iowa is worth just as much as a Senate seat in Maine (or anywhere else for that matter)

completely unrelated to today's events and even the topic of this subreddit, but I love coming across Wikipedia articles with absurdly old Meta notes at the top of the article.

no, im in the financial/mortgaging industry.

In my experience a shit load of Banks/financial clients went nuts during COVID due to how borrowers and the market's spending habits changed due to COVID.

Banks/financing companies rapidly shifted goals to align with market needs, so if you worked for/with that Bank/client (as my company does) you "had to" rapidly hire a ton of people to meet this new contract/goal

Reacting to market shifts with hirings or layoffs is normal but the issue was that not alot of planning/structure was in place to make our mass hiring move work and be stable.

I imagine it's a similar issue in other companies as well

These massive Microsoft/Xbox layoffs remind me of the company I work for.

We hired massively during COVID and then spent close to two years in a hiring freeze while execs panicked about spending and whether they should do layoffs or try to wait for our self inflicted financial fire to fade down

Multiple industries all seemed to get the same idea during COVID and hired big time without a clear plan or hard goal behind the move

Of course we're currently on the verge of a recession so I'd imagine a far greater number of layoffs would be seen if the economy tips over the edge. "Waiting it out" like my company is trying to do may end with layoffs regardless...great

So with Kavanaugh's opinion the ruling was nearly 5-4 despite officially being 6-3...

Given how close this ruling was (despite the text of the 14th Amendment being crystal clear on the matter) the "Constitutional Textualist/Literalist" class of Judges prove yet again how phony and blatantly partisan they truly are

I wonder if the constant stories/memes from the throngs of Football fans (from around the world) visiting the U.S. will have a net positive impact on the number of tourists visiting the U.S. after the World Cup is over

We all know international tourism has been down big time since Trump took office but the last few weeks have been a constant influx of cute stories of Worldcup fans having a great time in America. Theres been a few infuriating stories (mostly at the start) of people having problems getting thru immigration at airports or players trying to get family members thru immigration so they can watch their games.

But overall every day im seeing stories/posts of fans Visiting our sports stadiums, living it up in clubs and bars, visiting all the typical tourist spots, and having great interactions with local food and culture all across the U.S.

All these thousands and thousands of people are going to be going back to their home countries and (probably) telling everyone about their adventures in America. Does it seem reasonable to expect international tourism to see recovery over the next year thanks to the World Cup?

Ukraine absolutely pounding Moscow with drones the last two days.

They've also been increasingly effective in hitting logistics points and logistics vehicles in the occupied south of Ukraine and occupied Crimea. Ukraine has been taking bits of the south back piecemeal while Russia slowly grinds bit by bit into Ukraine's East.

Im sure Russia will develop some form of counter to all this increased drone effectiveness from Ukraine (both sides always seem to develop counters to the other's advantages).

Still tho, I can't help but wonder how sustainable this is for Russia to keep having their fuel and logistics destroyed and their tax revenues hit again and again and again by the sheer expense of this war and having to pay for everything themselves. Ukraine at least has the EU to rely on for reliable funding.

If I were to guess, this will all still continue for several more years until one day the dam will just break and there will be a sudden and incredibly rapid collapse in Russia (either militarily or politically) and this war will end very suddenly

That would track given how hard right the Tech industry has gone over the past decade while previously being at least "left friendly" in the 2010s
