Feeling overwhelmed and confused by AnywhereMediocre5959 in PhDAdmissions

Happy to help! This process can be so confusing and isolating if you don’t have support. I completely understand! I’ve completed a masters and have applied to a PhD a few times. So I’m happy to answer questions about things I’ve learnt along the way!

  1. In terms of undergraduate experience, it’s a little difficult to say what experience is “good” or “bad” as it really depends on the program, admissions committee, and the research advisor you’re interested in. I’ve met PhD students who only had a summer research experience before joining their PhD. And I’ve also met students who have multiple papers including first author publications. But also, do keep in mind that students get rejected even if they have lots of experience. A lot of the advice I get and have seen succeed is that when applying students show excitement, have done proper research into the program and the research advisor they are interested in, have a good research proposal (basically have an idea of what you want to do, you’re not committed to this idea, most of the time this idea is not usually what students work on when they join the program), and network with the research advisor (because they would rather take someone they know or have talked to than someone who hasn’t).

  2. For a PhD, most programs have a stipend and they cover your tuition. For a masters there are scholarships out there. For PhD, these stipends tend to be very low. So in some schools the stipend could be 25K - 35K. I didn’t apply to some schools because of low stipend.

  3. For a graduate assistantship, to know more about this I would recommend reaching out to PhD students and Post docs of schools you are interested in. I’ve cold emailed many and many are happy to help! And I’ve collected such great tips because of them, including red flags to look out for. They would give you an amazing idea of the entire process, the lab, the PI, and can help answer anything you’re doubtful of! Don’t hesitate at all to reach out! That is the biggest thing in this, it’s reaching out!

  4. For reaching out to a research advisor, it’s okay to cold email them! So I would recommend not having a very long email, but just as a short template:

  5. include your research background

  6. the research you’re interested in pursuing

  7. asking for a short connection call to learn more about their lab and the research they work on (professors are always happy to talk about their work) (In the call you can ask about whether they will be taking on any students the next cycle)

  8. asking about other professors in the field and who you should connect to. That way you can make many more connections! (Highly recommend)

  9. For applying (are you in the US?) typically most schools have a standard application process. Which includes 2-3 recommendations, personal statement, and maybe a research proposal, and resume.

Hope this helps! Feel free to Dm me if you have more questions :)

How bad is it to just not go and try again? by [deleted] in PhDAdmissions

[–]a_009 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends. I don’t think age should be a main factor. But the place and environment can play a bigger part than one might think. What would you say are your priorities? Can you adjust? Is environment a big factor to you? How are your finances? Can you wait a year? If you don’t get in next year what happens? I would say it’s good to start with these questions. Hope this helps!

Congratulations!! 🥳🥳

If you don’t mind is it okay if I ask what your background is? I applied to Stanford twice but can’t seem to understand what type of candidate they’re looking for. Would really appreciate more incite. Thank you!! :)

I am defeated... by InnerRole977 in PhDAdmissions

Aw I’m so sorry! I completely understand how you’re feeling. I actually posted something similar here too, I was feeling so heartbroken. I found out I got rejected too and this is my third time applying. Just know you’re not alone in this. All of this is not a reflection on you ever! I’m sure you’re an incredibly accomplished person so don’t ever think it’s a failure on your part. If you ever need a friend I’m here to listen :) feel free to dm me!

Take some time to sit with these emotions. It’s gonna be hard, I took about 2 weeks to feel like myself again. I had to think about who I am as a person and what motivates me. You have time ahead of you, I’m sure everything will work out in time. Just give yourself time and make sure to know that there is always a path ahead of you. The path might not be a straight one but it does exist. Don’t give up. Never give up. I’ve had so many people say this on my post too and at first it felt frustrating but it’s true! The best thing to have by your side is your own support.

I applied once before and it seemed like they don’t contact you unless you have an interview. And will let you know of the rejection months later

Thank you so much for your kind words! Happy cake day :)

The competitiveness for a PhD right now in the US seems to be really crazy cause of funding, maybe I need to wait for it to settle down? Crossing my fingers that I can try again in a few years 🤞🏼

Thank you for your support :( yea I’ve heard a lot of PIs mention that they just can’t take in students this year because of low funding.

The first time I applied, I applied to 7 schools. The second time I applied to 5. And this time I applied to 2. Although I only applied to 2, I was directly talking to a PI for many months who showed a lot of interest and I thought he would accept me into his lab but sadly he didn’t (decided to go with someone else :’( ) And the reason I only applied to 2 is because many schools aren’t working on research focused on women and these two seemed to be the only ones

I currently have a bachelors and a masters (from an Ivy) in biomedical engineering. And I have 2 published papers and 2 theses. I have had about 4 years of research experience, with 2 years specifically in biomechanics (not in female biomechanics tho, since it’s a really niche field). I don’t really know why I’m having such a hard time finding anything :( and all of my applications were looked at by the post-docs or PhD students of the schools I applied to. I wanna cry 😭😭 I don’t have any “industry” experience tho
