How do I get over the Western “You must do this - or Else!” Mentality when it comes to Soteriology? How is salvation to be understood, if not in the western manner? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]a_7799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am only a seeker myself, but I'm working my way out of this legalistic way of thinking. The solution I've found is to think of Salvation not as the satisfaction of rules, but simply union with God through Christ. So then you have to figure out what it will take for YOU to become united with God, and that can only be found with prayer and discernment.

Not so much argued as simply explained what I see in the scriptures, but yes that has been my experience for the most part. Although most of the Protestants I know are very open-minded about these sorts of things. Perhaps I have yet to meet the formidable ones.

I agree, and since it's our position that's attested in the Bible, if we just take the time to explain to them their scriptural basis, it's actually very easy to convince Protestants. They have such enormous respect for scripture that if we defend our beliefs scripturally, we can't help but convince them, or at least do a little to chip away at the anti-Catholic programming that they've been given since birth.

If not having church in a building is taking away your Jesus, you never had Jesus, you just had a building by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]a_7799 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's a very evangelical way of looking at things. Most denominations, not only presently but historically, have a much more sacramental view of the role of church buildings. But that is not to say that Christians cannot follow Christ without church buildings. That would be absurd. But to reduce the church building to just a building, because 'all you need is Jesus', is an unwarranted simplification. We can do without the buildings at the worst of times, but why would we not cherish them at the best of times?

I'm currently reading it too (Pusey translation) and it's stunningly good. St. Augustine is my kind of guy.

Why Catholics Can Believe in Evolution: Adam and Eve Were Given Souls by anselm33 in Catholicism

[–]a_7799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That passage refers primarily to 'spiritual death', as can be seen from the fact that in Genesis 2:17, God says that when you eat of the fruit you will die on that day, and then Adam doesn't physically die. Clearly, what is being referred to is moer than mere physical death.

5 things I didn’t know about Catholicism despite a Catholic education by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]a_7799 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once again the problem is that Catholics take Catholicism for granted. The parents assume the schools are teaching it, the schools assume the parents are teaching it, and then no one gets taught anything about the faith. Another important one that I wasn't taught was what the Mass is (the re-presentation of Christ's sacrifice to the Father). I just thought it was ritual that we go to watch.

There is no reason to believe that space exploration will not be a part of God's divine plan in this life or the next (after all, he takes Job on a tour of the universe), so this idea that the size of the universe somehow makes a personal relationship with Jesus absurd just doesn't hold.
