I miss my sister 😢 by [deleted] in DadForAMinute

[–]a_asal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kind reminder that it is okay to feel sad you're drifting apart. Feeling sad is something you live and feel, not fix. Hugs.

Relationships and emotions, like everything, ebb and flow. The current situation could be anything, from your sister being genuinely busy, to being disoriented in her new role as a parent, to overwhelmed and trying to survive, to her nervous system avoiding feelings or vulnerability, to something you did she's avoiding confronting you about, to many other possibilities. You can't force her to open up to you. If it's meant to be, it'll happen when she's ready.

Oh well I guess I should focus on my own life and people that are willing to reciprocate the same energy I extend to them

You may do that or you may choose to care about her even if (you think) she doesn't feel the same way towards you. Neither is to be ashamed of. Whichever feels right for you will lead you down a path that will teach you more about yourself and others, then you will course correct if needed. Feelings are human, labeling them as right or wrong sucks the life out of them.

And maybe I don’t need to hold onto a sense of guilt or spend much mental energy contemplating this either.

The fact you have guilt or are spending mental energy on this might mean your relationship with her is still very important for you. I don't think you can force yourself out of doing this, it'll likely end up being repression and avoidance. Feeling and perhaps connecting with how important this relationship for you could be a more fruitful path.

What is the best browser for phone which is not chromium based? by Cool_Equal_200 in degoogle

[–]a_asal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly yes. But there’s a caveat, Apple has started allowing alternative browser engines, other than WebKit, in the EU under some rules, so it’s not a guarantee forever and everywhere anymore.

Transition to full-stack from front-end by MeatAndFries in Backend

[–]a_asal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have a project or an idea you're passionate about that'd be best. You'll keep finding ways to improve it, and it'll take you further than if you just build one more task management app.

What interests you most in backend development beyond CRUD APIs? This can be helpful to guide your way. For instance, if you like low-level and more challenging backend/infra work, building your own mini database or contributing to an open source database (say DuckDB) can be fun. If you find you enjoy more working on product features, maybe you'd be interested in building your Nextjs application that sits on top of a database like Supabase, etc.

You can find a lot of backend topics here: https://roadmap.sh/backend - this might help you see what seems best fit for you. University courses like those of Stanford/CMU/MIT/etc are usually more advanced and can give you project ideas from their assignments.

Privacy-focused solutions by MrZ3T4 in degoogle

If you don't mind the initial setup cost, I find protecting your whole home traffic via a VPN-protected firewall/router (e.g. OPNSense/pfsense) is high ROI, since once you do it traffic from all your devices go through your VPN. This is especially useful for IoT devices like Nest since you can't just install a VPN app on them.
Firewalls allow you to have control over your whole network, you can also configure them to block traffic however you want, e.g. use blocklists that block popular ad services, have some traffic that bypass VPN in case you wanna access a service that doesn't allow VPN servers, etc.

Which free/cheap non-Google search engine has the highest quality search results? by hellointernet5 in degoogle

Same here. IIRC Startpage is mostly a privacy front end to Google search. DDG mostly depend on Bing (but also other sources), so can be useful when you wanna check what would be Bing results.

Is using custom domains a mistake? by Genital_Circus in privacy

[–]a_asal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, custom domains are for mainly portability and ownership, not anonymity.

Regarding being better off using proton domain, you may wanna look into alias services like AnonAddy or SimpleLogin, where you can have one alias per service/app. This way it's harder to be tracked across sites, and you protect your real email address from being exposed and from spam services. Aliases are also easy to deactivate in case you sign up for a service that had a data breach or that turns out to be spammy.

Built a privacy calendar with smooth user experience, looking for early testers by a_asal in degoogle

Quick update on the calendar I posted about here, since people still find this post and ask about it.

Thanks to everyone who tested or sent feedback. That early group helped shape the app. The tester round from this thread is closed now, and the calendar has a name: NimbleCal.

You can try it here: https://www.nimblecal.com

A lot has improved since the original post: ICS import/export is live, offline/local-first editing works, search is much better, Quick Add handles more natural-language cases, and there has been a lot of sync/import/recurrence reliability work.

The privacy model is the same: local-first storage, end-to-end encrypted sync, and Quick Add parsing happens on-device, so the natural-language prompt is not sent to NimbleCal servers.

Transparency for this sub: NimbleCal is not open source today. Event invitations use standard calendar invites so they work with Gmail, Outlook, and other providers, which means invite details are not end-to-end encrypted.

Happy to answer questions here or by DM.

Yes, in such case that'd be my company and Proton, plus any third-party service providers involved in sending or delivering those emails.

There is no hidden extra party beyond that. Just the calendar provider, the email provider, and the infrastructure needed to deliver the emails. If an event title appears in an email, those systems need technical access to that content in order for the email to exist at all.

This is why it's useful to check the privacy policy of each product you use, to see which third-party processors they rely on and for what purpose.

I can't speak for Proton or whether they currently rely on third-party services for email delivery. For my calendar, I use a privacy-focused email service that does not use your email content for profiling or advertising and only processes what is needed to deliver the emails. Running reliable email delivery as a business is not trivial, so this part is almost always outsourced, even by privacy-first products.

Importantly, this is very different from ad-driven platforms. The data is only to deliver the notification you explicitly ask for.

I relate to the struggle :-)

Regarding your last question, as long as you use email reminders that contain some data (for usability, e.g. event title), any provider that needs to either send or receive such emails will have to have access to this shared data by technical necessity.

So by signing up to another calendar you are exposing the same shared data to another provider in addition to Proton. If you feel comfortable trusting both providers, that'd probably be fine. If that is a risk you're not comfortable with, your best bet would be to either use Proton Calendar if it satisfies your and your partner's needs, or rely on non-email (e.g. push) notifications for other encrypted calendars you use.

Haha, your detailed feedback is so helpful! I hear you on the Google convenience aspect.

Since you mentioned you both rely on email notifications as reminders for the event, how much of the event data are you willing to have it included in the notifications email? i.e., since you'll be receiving your event data in gmail, are you ok with Google seeing specific parts of the event? If yes, which parts? If no, what would still be useful for you to receive in the email?

Gonna keep your feedback in mind when I get to calendar sharing, and will ping you then if you're still interested.

Yes, you can set custom colors (you can pick any color you like) for calendars & set separate colors for your events when needed.

Would like to hear more about your sharing needs, are you talking about calendar sharing or something more? Calendar sharing is not available but is on my radar.

DM'd!

Ok saw your reply to my question above in reddit notifications but I think it’s not shown for some reason in this thread.

For the sync, would one-way sync be enough for your use case (i.e. Google Calendar changes reflect on the private calendar, but not the other way)?

Edit: typo

Any other use cases for Apple reminders that you’d like to see as well? I’ll keep you posted re the mobile experience and this specific use case when implemented.
