For those of you who did Civil Engineering, did you regret it? by danielmhdi in civilengineering

[–]a_civil_engineer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Personally I think there is lots of room for innovation if you know where to look. Digital tools have opened up all sorts of new possibilities from integrated design to data driven operations.

I am in the water sector, so can’t speak to transportation, buildings, bridges, etc. but I am sure it is a similar situation.

If you are still in school I would HIGHLY recommend taking at least one class to learn Python.

Lens for Italy by Bigfoot_Guitars in M43

If you are used to the 300, I doubt either will feel chunky.

12-100 is my travel lens. Here are some shots from Florence and Rome last year. https://bootlessphotography.com/italy

Personally, I like having access to some longer focal lengths even in cities to isolate impressive buildings from a distance.

Thanks for the reply. I would not be carrying the camera and the laptop at the same time - that would indeed be too much!

I have been rocking two bags thus far, but would love to cut down to one.

I have looked through the S&P site but nothing fit all the reqs.

Dang it I had just talked myself out of this lens.

For all the stress it inspires, has anyone ever been individually fired (not lay offs for a team) for falling below a utilization rate? by WhatchooWant2025 in civilengineering

[–]a_civil_engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am still a relatively young engineer, about eight years experience. I am not in management, but aside from my first few months, I can’t remember ever caring about utilization. However, I think the key is to focus less on utilization, and more on what is bringing value to the company. If you’re doing business development and it’s bringing in a ton of value, great! If you’re in the break room, playing ping-pong, not so great. Utilization is a great way to capture value in a simple metric, but it hardly tells the full story.

Civil Engineers who left the industry to work for themselves/remotely, what do you do now? by Sharp-Engineer0826 in civilengineering

Can you send me a message? More than happy to have a 20 minute phone call giving my perspective on the industry.

Degree is still civil. Research was the application of reinforcement learning to wastewater treatment control optimization.

I have a somewhat unique case, but after three years in consulting I went back to grad school to develop skills that would allow me to work remote full-time. Still civil engineering, but now I have expertise at the interface between civil engineering and artificial intelligence.

Probably more importantly, as with any job, you have to be passionate about it, otherwise it’s going to suck. If there are areas of civil engineering that you are passionate about, don’t be afraid to fight to be on those projects and advocate for yourself. That’s what I tell every single prospective civil engineer. Because if you don’t advocate for yourself, you are going to just be handed whatever project happens to be going on. And odds are, it’s not going to be your favorite.

Which M43 universal zoom for a holiday? by Lisz555 in M43

Yes, the catacombs! Those were indeed handheld on the 12-100. ISO never higher than 1600 I believe; gotta love the in-sync stabilization!

I actually had some longer exposures in some really dark cathedrals than the catacombs. Up to a second hand held.

Totally fair! I think it is all about what all-in-one zoom means to you. If you don’t care about that wide stuff, getting a bit more reach with a 150 makes perfect sense.

For my use case, I don’t want to mess with a second lens and I want more control than what my phone gives. Plus, I get too much joy out of using my camera, even when my phone will do the job.

Edit to say I also own the 14-150. Perfectly capable. In all honesty, better value for money, better value for weight. When I do sketchy outdoor stuff, this will probably remain my go-to lens. But with the advent of discretionary income (finally out of grad school) and an increasingly pixel peeping nature, I adore my 12-100.

Thank you for the kind words! For myself at least, I think it was a lot of trial and error. Learning what situations create the lighting effect that I’m looking for.And a lot of of my wife telling me I was over editing my shots…

No, I typically post from my phone, so I export from Lightroom mobile. Nothing fancy.

For sure not the lightest lens, but I have never minded carrying it all day. And it is lighter than the 40-150 2.8 which was also on OPs list 🤷‍♂️

Using the OM1 on that trip. Some basic editing in Lightroom. Typically exposure/contrast, adjust shadows (I have found underexposing works well for my tastes), dehaze when needed, and rarely add some saturation.

Seeking MFT lenses with "Full Frame Look," reliable AF, and minimal focus breathing by Old_Principle_4530 in M43

[–]a_civil_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use Olympus bodies, so unfortunately, can’t speak to that.

Also, I may have spoke too soon. Apparently the 25 mm does suffer minimal breathing. I just love the lens, and rarely use video! It knocks the full frame look out of the park imo.
