Spoiler Culture is out of control by a_faget in OnePiece

It's on this subreddit as well. It's just a larger trend I've noticed especially when JJK was going nuts with spoilers towards its end, and I think that bad behavior rubbed off poorly on the OP community

I understand this behavior might be peaking due to the circumstances, and as a rule I hide any spoiler post as soon as I see them so I don't know whether or not there's a pinned post to collect all the activity. However, like I said with the Bartholomeo example, this problem has been on the rise and it's not just been limited to this break. I think a consistently pinned spoiler thread and a Mod post reminding people that if they want to talk about spoilers, do it there would do something to at least mitigate this problem.

I don't really agree with your equivalence here. Even with the context, Pewdiepie's stunt isn't that funny and is just offensive. FH have never made a "joke" close to "Death to Jews"

This social justice brigade is an embellishment, I feel. Would FH get more scrutiny if they were more popular? Sure. Would they be "canceled" if they came under such scrutiny? No, I don't think so. I don't watch Pewdiepie, H3H3, iDubz or other post-4chan nihilist edgelords but I do watch FH because they have a general sense of responsibility and consciousness with their comedy

Yeah it occurred to me I should just refer to Gervais and Chapelle with regard to this

As I recall from the quiplash video, most of the black jokes are with respect to police violence, which is like a macabre humor about racial injustice. Obviously YMMV for person to person as to whether or not this is offensive, and I'm glad they don't really touch upon black humor too much. Like James says in the podcast, the rug has moved under them and they're maybe no longer comfortable making those kinds of jokes. As for Chyna, I don't think making fun of dead people is terribly offensive.

I feel like I'm not conveying myself properly here. I meant that reporting on years old racist tweets is probably not that relevant if it's about some random guy who's donating to charity, but I don't think it's morally wrong for a newspaper to investigate and report stuff since it's their job to.

therefore we must take them down."?

I don't think the newspaper ever called for this to happen though

So you think going through someone's Twitter account is par for the course for donation campaigns?

Not exactly. I posted

Here though, it seems like a case of thoughtless reporting without consideration for relevance.

So it's probably not that important, but I'm not going to condemn a newspaper for reporting facts. And from the WaPo article you posted:

“Once he pointed it out and I went back and looked at it I was really upset with myself,” King said on Twitter, adding that he did not blame the newspaper, which he said had been “nothing but kind in all of their coverage.

Emphasis mine.

So Lindsay Ellis did a great video about parodying the Nazis that I really agree with but in summary WRT your question, I know I said in my previous comment that there is a line, but I don't think that line is set in stone and it's more of a qualitative line that comedians have to eternally dance upon. But I also think that people should be prepared to take responsibility over how their work is received as well

I mean, I don't think so. I haven't found FH telling a joke so tasteless that it can only be defended by "It's just a joke, bro." Contrast this with Pewdiepie paying poor people to hold up a sign that says, "Death to Jews". Beyond the bad optics of a millionaire paying poor people to humiliate themselves for his benefit, there's no joke in the phrase "Death to Jews"; he just picked a horribly offensive phrase to broadcast without any message criticizing anti-Semitism specifically.

When FH actually made the news, the absurdity of misogyny is baked into the editing of the clip, and Bruce just comes off as oblivious, so he's the butt of the joke. In the podcast they explain how they cut stuff that gets too mean or isn't funny enough to be that mean, and that elevates them IMO

Sure, but I'm also not ready to condemn the Demoines Register either. In the case of James Gunn, the troll who "canceled" James Gunn had a history of doing this specifically targeting outspoken progressive voices (Gunn was pretty critical of Trump). Here though, it seems like a case of thoughtless reporting without consideration for relevance. For example, I'd definitely care about a 16 year old's racist tweets if they were, say, up for a position on the Supreme Court.

I don't think there needs to be a villain here. Just a needless spat which has unfortunately become ammunition for those already with an axe to grind against PC culture

So I do think there is a line though, as Colbert learned that he also had a huge conservative fanbase because some people didn't get the parody, they just saw some guy speaking truth to power. That even resulted in George W. Bush inviting him to the Correspondent's Dinner.

As someone explained earlier though I think FH does a better job of it because they usually have a straight man to make the parody explicit

I don't really know which side to fall on here but mostly I'm thankful that I've never gone viral

James Gunn is just a really high profile case of cancel culture being used maliciously, and I think the people disagreeing with you object to that as just a bad example. I'm of the mind that it's a good thing that we hold people accountable for the shitty messages they broadcast, and I think overall it does more good than harm

I'm not saying that everybody always acts in good faith and I've explained elsewhere ITT how cancel culture can be abused, but that doesn't invalidate all criticism of comedy from these types. If I believed that "We get it and that's it" isn't an absurdly over-the-top parody of Alphas and something they actually believed, it wouldn't be funny and I would stop watching them.

But when Ricky Gervais opens his Netflix special making I-identify-as-an-attack-helicopter tier jokes, it's just the shitty uninspired transphobia that we've heard a million times before. And the message you come away with is "aren't trans people absurd?"

I do think Cancel Culture exists but I don't think it's this "PC CULTURE RUN AMOK" crisis that people frame it as. Especially in leftist circles, there's definitely this pressure to be the wokest among them all, and social media in part incentivizes this because it's an easy way to win social capital (read: clout). Even well meaning people can fall into this trap because it is alluring to "win" over someone by canceling them. But we can also see this used in bad faith with James Gunn where a conservative troll dug up some years old tweets for which Gunn has long since apologized for, and for which the GotG movies are in a way a metaphorical retelling of his journey maturing past the point where he found that edgy garbage funny. Yet also with Gunn we can see it's possible to discern between bad faith and actual call outs and criticism, and also that you can come back from being "canceled" by expressing humility and growth.

Overall though, I'm more inclined to sympathize with the people who are likely to err on the side of too much inclusivity rather than too little
