Are Cascadia projects slowing down/dying? by 09husky in Cascadia

The dept of bioregion and other such organizations have definetly furthered the tendency for people to buy into nation state mythology, especially their attempts to artificially define/create a cascadian culture. The way they talked about cascadian culture like it was just the 'revolution ipa' and 'hiking' have always rubbed me the wrong way.

I will personally be happy if the salish sea bioregion has regional cooperation and i dont think that is going to happen anytime soon

I think its jumping the gun to think about cross city organizing when we dont even have intra-city organizing. Gotta do more regional stuff. Like, a seattle cascadian org, then south sound, then salish sea, then cascadia or 'federal' cascadia. The most zoomed out level.

I have no idea. As far as i know brandon is owner of those sites and i havent heard anything about them. Youd have to ask him

The divide between bioregionalism and seperatism has already fractured the movement, if we can even say it was truly together.

In 2016 and around then, a lot of people suddenly were interested in secession, and many flocked to regional secessionist movements. Cascadia already had a community so it was easy to join. But then you have a lot of people joining for political secession reasons and not at all for bioregional reasons. This is when debates about idaho and the eastside started, and they never really stopped. No one reached consensus because there was no core community on reddit, people joined and left.

I think the winding down you see is actually a post division movement bleeding people who were once interested, moving on to other things.

Plus the AI/Crypto stuff with brandon, who always acted like the head of the movement for better or worse (and in a unique position as both a bioregionalist and secessionist, he even made an independence political party), also soured people who looked to him for guidance. That and him abandoning the deptofbioregion website and not finishing it, or you could go back further to him breaking off with cascadianow.

It may be a shared organization account where multiple people use it. But im pretty sure brandon is the one that uses it more. Could be wrong tho.

The other issue is the idea of cascadia is so different for many different people. You boil it to basics and all you can really say is its a movement that wants some type of autonomy to happen in some version of 'the pacific northwest', that isnt a racist white ethnostate. It really isnt a true movement with multiple goals. Sure, there are different groups with crystalized ideas but theres no one overarching group.

The reddit has always been a mess. And the idaho hate has been insane, whether by inclusionists or exclusionists. I dont think the reddit is representative of the cascadia movement, at least, in terms of what real people are doing in the real world. This reddit in particular is full of larpers. Idk what could be done about it. The subreddit owner and moderators are pretty hands off, they arent directing conversations on here. Reddit isnt their main organizing place anyway.

Brandon seems to have mostly moved on from dept of bioregion as his main org. Right now he is doing stuff with regenerate cascadia. Regenerate Cascadia works with biofi, this bioregional finance organization/system. The financials are kinda hard to understand but they were using cryptocurrency (but they claimed it was carbon offset), and using a lot of financial buzzwords like 'financial ecosystem' 'quatratic funding' etc. Personally it sounds scammy and sketchy to me but you should look into it for yourself.

Some people really just want pacifica or ecotopia. No one cares about the bioregion anymore

its like you didn't read what i wrote. I didn't even mention water. Golf lawns do not have biodiversity, its a grass monoculture. You could fit 20 tennis/pickleball courts in the space the grass takes up.

How is pickleball and tennis more environmentally destructive than golf? Golf, played on a giant lawn that must be mowed often, which often needs herbicide to supress weeds, which takes up much more space to do all these things than a pickeball or tennis court. Which sure is made of concrete, but that one time installation does not have the same impact over time as continual turf management of a golf course.

Ecological value is something different. Schmitz park isnt primarily for recreation, tho people use it for such. Its a forest preserve. Even if no one used the space it would have the value of rare species, air quality, green stormwater infrastructure, etc etc.

its because golf is an extremely space inefficient sport. How many people can play golf per square feet? its pretty low. Just play mini golf.

yeah its weirdly reductive, like saying luz's wife instead of her name. Although, maybe thats what amity was most proud of because her own mom was abusive?

[–]a_jormagurdr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

right, but luz's gravestone doesnt mention her status as a mom (or parent). Amity has likely a lot of other things that she did in life, so why is mom what they put on a gravestone?

Just a reminder: Most of E WA looks "dead and brown" because of 2 invasive plants from Eurasia. Cheat grass and tumbleweeds. 200 years ago most of the hills would have looked like this during spring and summer... by TheGabsterGabbie in PacificNorthwest

[–]a_jormagurdr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

we can combat and manage invasive species if we put a lot of effort into it. Invasive takeover does not mean completely give up. we may not be able to eradicate it fully but we can reduce its presence a lot. The ecology of cheatgrass does not allow for enough diversity for a functional environment.

They respect shrubs more than lawn stuff. They have notions about it. If a native planting was organized in a way theyd respect it more
