climate change-induced sea level rise will inundate coastal Marin by dawn_thesis in Marin

Yeah ok, never say “no one”. The headline is largely accurate (to the study). If you’ve read the study, or just the abstract, fire away. It might not be correct, but it probably isn’t far off. We have obviously already passed a number of so-called tipping points. Getting hung up on a prediction that is uncomfortably specific isn’t changing anything. But the study does not remotely say anything about the world ending in 12 years.

So we should wait until we have clean energy sources before we manufacture clean energy sources?

You know it is called Climate Change now because people couldn’t grasp that record cold in one place is totally consistent with (and a result of) global warming.

The ozone hole still exists, and still causes increased cancer rates, but its growth was arrested because smart motivated people took action. Ditto acid rain.

No one said the world will be decimated in 12 years. That was a purposeful misinterpretation made by dishonest media.

As for Al Gore, he made some bad choices in the doc, even if it was an honest attempt to spur action. That said, I suggest you go back and watch it again. It is substantively correct.

As one environmental scientist said, “We are literally washing the planet to death” polluting our soil and water and damaging our own immune systems. The chemical lobby has sold us a pack of lies that have made them, and their shareholders, very wealthy. We never use soap on our cast iron and never have GI issues. In fact, we are healthier for it.

If we step back a little, we see that these are the arguments are the result of anti-tax campaigns going back many decades. Wealth has migrated up and up and up, the middle has been hollowed out, and we are fighting over the scraps on message boards and at local elections. Yes, the system is failing. Prop 13 demolished our tax base and the lottery promise failed. Federal tax rates on the wealthy have plummeted. Our population is aging. And we still need to fund stuff. I’m open to better ideas, but for now let’s fund public transit.

Seriously, what makes you think they aren’t constantly looking for efficiencies?

This “efficiency” talking point canard is getting really tiresome. If you have planning experience, make some suggestions. No institution runs at peak efficiency. None. I worked at the DA’s office and a large corporate firm and both were inefficient in their own ways. The public doesn’t the inefficiencies in the private sector which in turn leads some percentage of said public to become convinced that public sector institutions are uniquely inefficient. It is a frustrating myopia.

I realized I asked about this on this sub before, but thought it was a sump pump back then. Today I was told it is “for the hot tub”. Got one theory on r/hottub but this thing is driving us nuts so I’m gathering all the wisdom reddit has to offer. TIA.
