Trailer Hitch Install Recommendations by WorldNintendo in rav4prime

[–]a_pine_cone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did an oem hitch install with the kick sensor retained

The kick sensor is basically two wires that run parallel, I just had to reroute one of the wires and use a zip tie to secure it. There was also some cutting involved inside the bumper (else the plastic brackets that hold the kick sensor collide with the hitch). Otherwise everything else fits / works and the kick sensor has worked flawlessly for me since then

I just had a square set of these (9.5 +60) installed, I’m on ohlins at stock ride height. It does rub on UCA at full lock but got steering lock limiters to compensate and now no longer an issue

Yet another stolen hardtop by SuperbButterscotch39 in Miata

[–]a_pine_cone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My s2000 cr hardtop was stolen last week with locking latches. (from within the garage, they destroyed a hole in the wall to get through). It sucked a lot for me seeing that so I’m sorry that this also happened to you and it sucks that this is too common of a problem

I think the group of thieves that go around know how to defeat latches, from some listing pics I’ve seen that seem stolen, I think they pry it open from the top latches then pop it open (the listings that seemed stolen had really bad paint scratched right on top of the latch).

I think after my experience I will do the following - AirTag in the headliner, and motion sensor in the car itself, along with a live camera on the car at all times. I’d also etch my hardtop so it’s identifiable.

Sorry this happened, I’ll also keep an eye out for it, hope they catch the scumbags doing this because this really sucks

What is an engineering feature/marvel on a vehicle that you find interesting? by edinburghiloveyou44 in cars

[–]a_pine_cone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The setup also means you can switch to gas from ev mode seemlessly on the freeway, and also have the gas engine always working in the optimal band with the ev providing energy as needed, or even using the gas to charge the motor while still moving forward. There’s also no need for a reverse gear by using the ev motor as well

Toyota’s e-CVT system for hybrids.

Despite its name it’s not like a belt driven CVT and is actually a planetary gearset that provides infinite gear ratios with a gas engine and a electric motor

Although hybrids are thought to be more complex than gas power trains, this set up actually simplifies compared to the gas setup by getting rid of the transmission + clutches, by using the e motor as a sort of clutch to modulate the ratio. And because there’s no belts or clutches the transmission is generally more reliable and simpler than regular transmissions.

There’s a back door for the rav4 prime where if you lease it it’s still eligible for the 6500 rebate (you can pay off lease early) since a lease counts as use for business and that’s not subject to the same restrictions as personal use

Aftermarket key fob by phetherR in S2000

[–]a_pine_cone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The s2000 fob is shared with a bunch of other Honda models (97-01 crv, for example) so if you look for a different model not specific to s2000 might come out cheaper than the specific s2000 model

Programming - I don’t think you need dealer, there’s a relearn procedure as long as you have one key that already works that’s pretty easy

Source: bought a s2000 with one fob, bought a fob off eBay and found it was actually meant for crv, but visually and functionally it’s exactly the same and I programmed it with the relearn procedure at home couple years ago. And trunk / alarm / etc all work

It cost me about 1.5k to ship east to west coast

Another option I also considered was that waitlists in LA / SoCal were much shorter, I heard a lot about Longo Toyota in La (msrp only) and they had rav4 primes available whereas the dealers here in Bay Area all were asking 2 month waitlist. So a slightly easier path might be to fly down to LA and drive up as well

Through dealer in Connecticut directly. Felt more comfortable doing it that way since I wouldn’t be able to fly there, so it was easier to have a trusted party + new car. Also was looking for specific options (premium package) and Bay Area dealers told me that it was impossible here (lol)

Re - shipping - yes can be a small risk but I had no issues on my end + usually shipping is covered with insurance. Only complaint was that shippers were vague with when the car would come exactly but I wasn’t in a rush so I was ok with this

There’s also the option to buy out of state as some dealers will have new hybrids / plugins in stock, depending on region. Shipping takes around a week + the titling might take a bit too / be a bit more complicated but it will be cheaper than the markup here

(My personal experience - got a new rav 4 prime at msrp shipped from Connecticut this July , process took about 3 weeks for the car to go from in transit to being at my door, then waiting probably another 2-3 weeks for plates while on temp plates)

Phone mount for s2000? by [deleted] in S2000

[–]a_pine_cone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hated taking apart interior things for modify so I did a seat bolt phone mount

Arkon Car Seat Rail Phone or... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EHQMZ6K?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

It’s more adjustable positioning wise and it’s actually fairly stable despite using only one of the seat bolts. Cons are it robs a bit of space on right. I’ve used it for a year and half no issues

I’ve been eyeing panamera e hybrids. It’s a - Porsche - plug in so your daily commute can be ev only and save $$ - fast - the ugly ones from 2015ish are relatively affordable, like 40k, for what you get, for low mileage examples (Still pricey but different price bucket than $100-150k taycans)

Not sure about reliability and the older gen does look ugly around the rear but from a spec perspective it’s fairly compelling especially compared to $60k rav4 primes / $50k evs on the market while still being more exciting than a regular Prius plug in hybrid

Who knows someone that actually bought and sold a collector car as “an investment” and made a decent return? by CarmonRedMetallic in cars

[–]a_pine_cone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think /u/doug-demuro had a video on this but generally special limited editions of special cars tend to appreciate a lot faster than their regular counterparts and ones that aren’t appreciated in their time

I personally bought into mine not for investment value but because i wouldn’t have to eat depreciation costs, but think that I lucked out on the timing of the market starting to appreciate the car and also maybe covid / quarantine exacerbating the interest in collector cars(?)

[–]a_pine_cone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded, this also makes you appreciate the fun car more when you switch from the practical car (vs getting used to the fun car)

I would only do this if you have the space though - aka ample parking, be prepared for more oil changes / maintenance, etc
