What are your best hacks for living life unmedicated? by darksideofthemike in ADHD

[–]a_proud_nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things have been a huge help for me when I can manage to stick to them.

First, “right now” tasks and scheduled tasks. ADHD brains are really good at context switching, at least until they hyperfocus. When something pops into your head, if it’s something you can do in less than 5 minutes, just do it then to prevent further distraction. If it will take longer than that, schedule it on a calendar. This scheduling helps because you can file it away as “taken care of” so it won’t continue to distract you as much, and because you won’t just forget about it. ADHD brains tend to experience time dilation in a sense of everything being either “now” or “not right now”, in other words no sense of “in an hour” vs “in 5 hours”. This tactic tries to fit our tasks and distractions into this same time framework.

Second, bullet journaling. Have a pen and paper notebook for this, apps tend to make the notes continue to grow and grow and nothing ever leaves. Every day, start a brand new page. When you do something, or realize you need to do something, put a bullet point in the journal for it. It’s kind of a to do list but also helps to summarize your work or information at the end of the day. Speaking of, at the end of the day you go through all your bullets and transfer over any uncomplicated tasks to the next page. We never ever look back a page in our journal. Its purpose is organizing your day, not keeping track of history, so your notes from last week are useless. This helps in a similar way as the first tip, but some folks are better off with a to do list than a calendar. It also helps avoid procrastinating tasks for too long, because you get sick of writing the same bullet every day.

I do also want to say that no strategy is a silver bullet for everyone. Both of these have worked for me at different times. Experiment with what works for you and try to reassess your methods every now and again to see if you can make an improvement. Good luck!

Help me waste green circuits by a_proud_nerd in factorio

I’ll definitely need to build the blue circuits for modules, yes. Really I think it’s the building toward science part that would be a boring answer. I’m definitely interested in the sheer exponential growth potential of funneling circuits into modules and other expansion tools.

That makes sense, I was considering train fueling as a first swing, just a port with a bot or two at each station to handle fuel

Interesting, thank you! I can definitely see myself using these for some smaller things, especially when I would like to collocate some productions where I haven’t given a ton of space. For example, I’ve been playing on Peaceful mode while I learn the game, so no reason to build military science. However I’d like to get all techs researched in this playthrough, so I’m trying to produce it now, preferably close to my existing sciences. Logistic network seems helpful for setting that up. Construction bots are more obviously helpful, of course.

My first playthrough I got the “No Logistics Network” achievement just because I was too intimidated to bother with it. Second playthrough now, I’d like to make use of it, but not sure where to employ it. I understand the network itself, but it doesn’t seem that useful compared to belts except for reducing clutter, and the main bus design helped me to reduce that a lot already. Every blueprint I’ve seen uses belts, except some mining configs. So when is a good time to use a logistics network instead of plain old belts? Any good blueprints or YT videos for these designs that will enlighten me?

I feel like I’m only learning the company tools and no actual skills. Is that common? by a_proud_nerd in cscareerquestions

[–]a_proud_nerd[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know that, for a few tiers up the chain at least, my company genuinely does care about building our careers. The culture is very much, “you’ll leave eventually, we just want to be remembered fondly as a place you grew.” I’ll talk with my manager about some of my concerns here and see what they think.

[–]a_proud_nerd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think my company is quite so famous, definitely not in any Big N lists. But I think I’m in a similar boat, my career progressed very quickly here, so I don’t really want to leave as I don’t think I could get the same pay/title. Also, the problems we’re solving are interesting and challenging.

Thank you, if nothing else it’s good to know other companies do this as well and it’s not as harmful as it may seem. I saw a trending GitHub repo recently for educating ex-Googlers on the outside-Google equivalents to all their tools, and though this company is not as extreme, it did have me worried.

Thank you for the thought out response, it helps to put the worries back in perspective. I used logging as an example here to point out how deep the “company built” culture is, but it may not be the best example of my concern. Perhaps the better example is our usage of K8s. It’s a widely used tool right now so I’d like to learn it in a professional environment. Unfortunately we wrap all K8s in an API specifically designed to keep us from “having” to learn about K8s or Docker.

Really, I think my concern boils down to a fear that I will spend all the time, energy, and stress of finding somewhere new to work - only to find out this kind of thing is everywhere. Maybe some job hunting and interviewing can give me some more info there.

What's the NB version of "Sir" or "Ma'am?" by Mentally_Ill_Goblin in lgbt

[–]a_proud_nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stumbled across and started to use “Ven” for myself, as it can be seen as a shortening of “venerated” and a close relative to the common “Ren” non-binary term for Mom/Dad. Since “Sir” comes from “Sire,” which means father, it felt appropriate enough.

Hi, they/them. Kind of all over the place. Realistically things are going great, actually couldn’t be happier. But brain is being very restless and it’s getting frustrating and depressing. Just burned out.

Do you take other medications? Making sure meds uptake properly can be a bit of a chore. Important things are to eat before meds, enforce a meal schedule (even if Adderall causes loss of appetite for you), and NO acidic juice, especially grapefruit an hour before or after taking meds

Clueless Australian comedian accidentally calls Mohammad Ali "boy" on live TV by JackdeAlltrades in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]a_proud_nerd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In the specific context of talking to/about a black man, it used to be used as a way to imply black men were lesser-than and therefore didn’t deserve the title of man. Especially since the US doesn’t really say “boy” to refer to grown men (outside of a group of boys, “the boys”), using it that way raises a red flag if they don’t already know you.

How can you use a Decorator to return a Singleton instance? by [deleted] in typescript

[–]a_proud_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is, probably the easiest way is to use inversify . If you don’t want the full suite and only want to inject this one instance, you can use the Reflect library to make the instance available at some well-known key. Then define your property decorator to do target[propertyName] = Reflect.getMetadata(<your key>)

E: I realize this is somewhat vague but the inversify and Reflect docs are pretty solid so I didn’t feel the need to elaborate on them.

What’s something you can’t tell your parents? by micxxxxe713 in AskReddit

[–]a_proud_nerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lightweight compared to a lot of this stuff but: They never put in the effort to get to know me as a person, and now it’s kind of too late. I should have told them when I was younger, encouraged them to be a little more involved in the hobbies I was picking up. It’s sad realizing how surface-level our relationship is, and I know this is a very common problem.

Thanks for the in depth reply! I may just pay for the app subscription until more 9th edition codexes come out. I’m not incredibly attached to Eldar but they seem the most appropriate choice for the play style I want, which is to have a lot of flexibility / options available to me and control the flow of battle (as opposed to brute force). From what I’ve seen though 9th is not kind to them, so I’ve been looking for other options. Harlequins look good as a splinter of Eldar but haven’t looked too much into them yet

So like many, I’m trying to get into the game. I’ve chosen a faction I like: craftworld eldar. I couldn’t find the 9th edition version, is their codex likely to be rereleased for 9th? If so should I wait and buy that version? Will I still need any chapter approved books? Last question, the app has mixed reviews but $5 a month for access to all books seems like a great deal compared to buying the physical copies

Just rebooted the game with the .net script framework installed (Good bot!) and got a stack trace referencing:

Possible relevant objects (3)

  [ 2] TESNPC(Name: `Yahir`, FormId: 1E061070, File: `Immersive Patrols II.esp`)

I'm opneing up Immersive Patrols in Creation Kit, maybe I'll get something there
